A reveal at the end of the film is that Captain Carol Danvers' call sign (nickname) as a fighter pilot was "Avenger." While this serves as a plot mechanism to explain how the Avengers were named, Danvers would not have realistically received such a call sign. First, call signs are almost always pejorative, for instance based on something unwise a new pilot may have done or said. Second, being one of a very few female fighter pilots in the 1980s (prior to the 1991 Tailhook naval aviation sexual harassment scandal), Danvers would have almost certainly received a call sign related to her gender in an unflattering way.
