During a recent conversation promoting his awards season contender, A Private War, Jamie Dornan talked about the importance of being timely, especially with this pertinent story (the first narrative film from documentarian Matthew Heineman) of journalists on the front lines of reporting and photographing major conflicts in the Middle East and around the world.

Dornan said, “Our director said something interesting very, very early on, one of the first Q&As we did about how you want your movies to be timeless and timely… even in the time from when we made it to release, it became even more timely in terms of very obvious and awful examples of the treatment of journalists, but also with respect to what’s still going on in Syria.”

“Marie died there in 2012 and here we are 6 years on and over half a million to billions have been killed within that regime and nothing truly changing you know,

Atomic Blonde movie review: bland ambition

MaryAnn’s quick take… The living, breathing, bleeding life of the breathtaking fight scenes cannot overcome confusingly twisty spy intrigue and multiple male gazes on the story. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women; love spy stuff

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Berlin, 1989. The Wall is about to fall, but the Cold War isn’t over yet. MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron: The Fate of the Furious, Kubo and the Two Strings) is sent in to retrieve a missing list of all spies and operatives on all sides, if she can find it before the Soviets do. It’s an “atomic bomb of information,” not least because the list includes the identity of a double agent known as Satchel. Atomic Blonde — I guess because she’s so hot?

Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan reunite for Jim Sheridan’s H-Block

Author: Zehra Phelan

Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan seem to have a taste for the war movie after their time together on last year’s Anthropoid. The pair are teaming up yet again for Jim Sheridan’s H-Block which also has Pierce Brosnan locked in talks to join the project.

Related: Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan on Anthropoid

H-Block will be based on the true story of the Maze Prison escape, which was known as The Great Escape when the story broke in Northern Ireland. Murphy stars as the head of the ring of Ira prisoners who has earned the respect of the prison guards but now just wants a life of peace. Dornan takes on a role in which many of his adoring female fans will not be used to seeing from the Fifty Shades actor. He will be playing an Ira Prisoner who starts discovering weaknesses in the prison.

Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan and Pierce Brosnan heading to H-Block

The violent breakout saw twenty people injured, while one prison officer died of a heart attack after being stabbed.

Murphy will play the head of the Ira prisoners, who has earned the respect of the guards and now just wants a life of peace. Dornan will portray an Ira member who begins to discover weaknesses in the prison’s security, while Brosnan is starring as the film’s antagonist, the warden of Maze Prison who finds himself pitted against the escapees.

Free Fire movie review: guns a-boring

MaryAnn’s quick take… A 90-minute shootout that never makes us care who lives and who dies. In attempting to send up a cinematic cliché, this only becomes a tedious example of same. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast

I’m “biast” (con): increasingly not a fan of Ben Wheatley

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Eight people walk into an abandoned warehouse in Boston in 1978. There’s Chris (Cillian Murphy: Anthropoid, In the Heart of the Sea), whom we can presume is Ira because he has an Irish accent and he’s there to buy enough guns to supply a small army. There’s Justine (Brie Larson: Kong: Skull Island, Room), who has brokered the deal with Ord (Armie Hammer: The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Entourage)… or is it Ord who has brokered the deal with seller Vernon (Sharlto Copley: Chappie,

Let’s Kill Some Nazis In This New Trailer For HHhH

World War II’s Operation Anthropoid has always seemed to be tailor-made for the cinema. Not only is ‘anthropoid’ a really cool sounding word, but a mission to assassinate a high-ranking Nazi that concludes with just lobbing an anti-tank grenade at his car sounds intrinsically awesome. And so we come to HHhH, the English-language debut of French director Cédric Jimenez which dramatizes the mission and whose international trailer has just been released.

Starring Jack O’Connell, Jack Raynor, Rosamund Pike, Jason Clarke and Mia Wasikowska, this preview makes the film look like a slightly less stylized Inglourious Basterds, featuring an exciting looking church-based firefight, lots of behind-the-scenes Nazi villainy, and oodles of apocalyptic fascist speech-making. As far as Naziploitation films go it doesn’t look half bad, though it’s hamstrung by what is, in my opinion, one of the worst titles for a movie I’ve ever seen. Not only is HHhH essentially un-Googleable,

‘HHhH’ Trailer: Jack O’Connell and Jack Raynor Need to Assassinate An Infamous Nazi Leader
Operation Anthropoid, in which a team of Czechoslovak British-trained paratroopers assassinated Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich during World War II, has been Hollywood movie bait dating back to the 1940s. The story was last depicted on the big screen as recently as 2016, when Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan starred in “Anthrophoid,” but it looks like we’ll be getting another version of the story in the coming months.

Fifty Shades Darker movie review: where is the fantasy?

MaryAnn’s quick take… Thank god this insult of a movie doesn’t try to fool us into believing that the controlling Christian Grey is appealing. That would be even more horrific… I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): appalled by the popularity of this series

I have read the source material (and I loathe it)

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Happy Valentine’s Day! Feels more like Groundhog Day, though, what with demure idiot Ana Steele jumping right back onto the horrific merry-go-round of her “relationship” with Seattle billionaire Christian Grey. It’s more of the same in Fifty Shades Darker that we saw in the first movie, Fifty Shades of Grey: He does something utterly inappropriate to violate her boundaries as a person, she bites her lip and unconvincingly murmurs “Go away,” he gets even more unpleasantly aggressive, and she gives in to him.
