Casey Johnson & David Windsor Join New Freeform Series ‘Besties’ As Co-Creators & Showrunners
Exclusive: The Real O’Neals co-creators Casey Johnson and David Windsor have come on board Freeform’s upcoming multi-camera comedy series Besties as co-creators, writers, executive producers and showrunners. They will co-create and write the series alongside original co-creator/executive producer Ranada Shepard through ABC Signature, the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios.

Freeform in May announced a straight-to-series order for Besties, which was to be created and executive produced by Kenya Barris, creator of the cable network’s breakout single-camera comedy series Grown-ish, and Born Again Virgin creator Shepard. In light of Barris’ exit from his ABC Studios deal for a pact at Netflix, he will no longer be involved as a writer but will remain an executive producer.

‘The Flash’: Danielle Nicolet Upped To Series Regular For Season 5 Of CW Drama
Exclusive: We’ll be seeing much more of Cecile Horton in the upcoming season of the CW’s The Flash. Danielle Nicolet, who has recurred heavily during the past two seasons, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming fifth season.

Nicolet’s Horton is the district attorney of Central City and love interest to Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), whose mind-reading superpowers arose when she became pregnant. She was introduced in a two-episode arc at the end of Season 1 before returning as a recurring character at the beginning of the third season. Nicolet has appeared in a total of 20 episodes of The Flash so far.

Based on the DC characters, The Flash is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, showrunner Todd Helbing and Sarah Schechter. The series is produced by Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

Freeform Orders ‘Besties’ Comedy Series From Kenya Barris & Ranada Shepard
Following the breakout success of Kenya Barris’ Grown-ish, Freeform has ordered a second comedy series from the Black-ish creator, this time multi-camera. The pickup is part of the upfront announcements by Freeform which is sharing an upfront presentation with sibling ABC this season.

Created by Barris and Born Again Virgin creator Ranada Shepard, Besties explores friendship, identity, race, and class as two lifelong best friends use each other to get through some of the toughest challenges that they will ever face – figuring out who they are and who they want to be.

Barris and Shepard executive produce via ABC Signature Studios, the cable/streaming arm of ABC Studios where Barris is under an overall deal. (He has been in talks to exit his pact.)

The series order for Besties comes exactly a year after Freeform picked up the pilot for Grown-ish, a spinoff from Black-ish originally developed and ordered by ABC,

‘American Idol’ Alum Diana DeGarmo & Ace Young Join Planned Off-Broadway Musical

Exclusive: Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young, former American Idol contestants and real-life couple, have signed on to star in Hit Her With The Skates, the musical that premiered at New Jersey’s Hamilton Stage last season and is eying an Off Broadway production for the fall.

The musical by Christine Rea and Rick Briskin, directed by Michael Schiralli, had a sold-out run at the Rahway, New Jersey theater last season, getting a boost of attention from critics and ticket sales.

Rea, the creator and lead producer, called DeGarmo and Young “powerhouse vocalists and they’re charming people who will knock the pop/rock vocals out of the park and deliver on the comic, whimsical demands” of the show, a musical in the vein of Grease and Xanadu.
