Sarandon plays Marnie, an overbearing sixty-something mother, who has moved to Los Angeles from New Jersey for the purpose of being close to her daughter Lori (Rose Byrne). As the plot unveils itself, we see there is more to Marnie’s relocation across the coast than what meets the eye. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions: Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret

  • Variety
The team at Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will get a lot of mileage out of their tuxedos at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Michael Helfand and Joe Matukewicz, the division’s two co-heads, are hitting Canada with eight films in tow — a collection that includes Oscar-hopefuls such as “The Front Runner,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and “Wildlife.”

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will focus on distributing these largely indie pictures in foreign territories. They usually leave the U.S. release to other studios. That may be part of the reason that, for all its activity, the division remains something of an enigma to most people.

“We’re a little under the radar,” said Matukewicz. “People sometimes don’t understand what we do because all our movies are different. No one is alike and we have a very diverse slate in terms of budget range or genres.”

They may not be a household name,

Meryl Streep in ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’: A look back at her 20th Oscar nomination, the competition and the outcome
This article marks Part 20 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Award, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.

In 2015, more than a decade since their collaboration on “The Manchurian Candidate,” Meryl Streep and filmmaker Jonathan Demme reunited on what would prove the director’s final motion picture. “Ricki and the Flash”, written by another Oscar winner (Diablo Cody), cast Streep as a wannabe-rock star who abandoned her family to chase her dreams. She later returns home, hoping to reconcile, to a chilly reception.

While “Ricki and the Flash” has its passionate proponents, the film was greeted that August to a lukewarm critical reception and modest box office – Streep’s lowest-grossing live action feature in nearly a decade. Even more

‘The Glass Castle’ Review: Brie Larson Can’t Rescue a Family Drama That Turns Anarchy Into Soap Opera

‘The Glass Castle’ Review: Brie Larson Can’t Rescue a Family Drama That Turns Anarchy Into Soap Opera
Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2013 breakout drama “Short Term 12” delivered a heartwarming story with bite. His portrait of a home for troubled teenagers owed much to Brie Larson, who played its passionate supervisor with a mixture of empathy and rage against the flaws of a system designed to improve young people’s lives. It delivered a sentimental message without trumping its characters’ palpable rage and cynicism, and established Cretton as a director capable of generating emotion without pandering.

Cretton still makes that effort with his long-awaited followup, “The Glass Castle,” but with less success. While he has a fascinating story and another stirring Larson performance, the results are minor and decidedly more middlebrow.

Adapted from Jeanette Walls’ memoir, Larson plays the author as she grows up in a wildly dysfunctional household headed by her alcoholic father Rex (Woody Harrelson), who forces the family to live a nomadic, hand-to-mouth existence in

Maggie Betts to Co-Write and Direct Political Drama for Focus Features

Maggie Betts: Variety/YouTube

Novitiate” writer-director Maggie Betts has booked her follow-up to the coming-of-age nun drama. Deadline reports that she’s sold an untitled original pitch to Focus Features. Little is known about the project except that it’s a contemporary political drama and Betts will direct. She’ll also pen the script along with Andy Bellin (“Lovelace”).

Maven PicturesCeline Rattray and Trudie Styler are set to produce, while Josh McLaughlin will oversee the movie for Focus.

Novitiate,” Betts’ first narrative feature, premiered at Sundance back in January. She won the Breakthrough Director award at the fest. Sony Pictures Classics snagged the rights to the film and is planning a release this fall. The 1960s-set drama follows Cathleen (Margaret Qualley, “The Leftovers”), a young woman who is raised by a non-religious single mother in rural Tennessee. A scholarship to a Catholic School leads Cathleen down a religious path where she pursues a life devoted to God, but on her journey to becoming a nun, she begins to question her faith. The nearly-all-female cast includes Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”), Dianna Agron (“Glee”), Julianne Nicholson (“Masters of Sex”), and Morgan Saylor (“White Girl,” “Homeland”).

“Focus has made a concerted effort to bolster its roster of female directors,” Deadline observes. “Counting the new deal with Betts, it has put six such films in the mix: the Niki Caro-directed ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife,’ the Julia Decournau-directed ‘Raw,’ the Sofia Coppola-directed ‘The Beguiled,’ the Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre-directed ‘Mustang’ and most recently the Massy Tadjedin-directed ‘Circle Of Treason.’” In 2016 Focus released women-directed titles such as Lorene Scafaria’s “The Meddler,” Rebecca Miller’s “Maggie’s Plan,” Meera Menon’s “Equity,” and Maren Ade’s “Toni Erdmann.”

Betts previously helmed the documentary “The Carrier,” a portrait of an HIV-positive and pregnant mother, and “Engram,” a short about an elderly man and woman who reconnect after many years.

Check out a video of Betts and the stars of “Novitiate” discussing what drew them to the project. They explain how rare — and appealing — it was to work on a female-led story.

Arthouse Box Office: Niche Ethnic Releases Overpower Specialty Openers

Specialty films these days range across more than core upscale urban and critically acclaimed quality fare. This weekend’s surprise: two foreign-language films placed second and third in the box office Top Ten.

The U.S./Mexican coproduction “How to Be a Latin Lover” (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ranked second with over $12 million from 1,118 theaters. Even more impressive, the Indian epic sequel “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” (Great Indian) placed third with $10,138,000 in only 425 theaters. Both movies beat James Ponsoldt’s Dave Eggers novel adaption “The Circle” (Stx), starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, which opened to only $9.2 million in more than twice as many theaters.

(Read more in our Top Ten report.)

Among the specialty audience usual suspects, nothing managed to open with as much as a $10,000 per theater average. “Obit” (Kino Lorber) ranked highest, while Rami Malek-starrer “Buster’s Mal Heart” (Well Go USA) and “Natasha” (Menemsha) led the other New York openers.

Captain Marvel Gets Mississippi Grind Directors

Captain Marvel Gets Mississippi Grind Directors
After months of speculation, Marvel has finally chosen its directors for Captain Marvel, bringing in a pair of indie filmmakers who weren't mentioned as front runners in the past. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who most recently directed the A24 dramatic comedy Mississippi Grind starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn, have signed on to take the helm of this superhero adventure, which has Brie Larson set to star as the title character. While this news has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios itself, the studio reportedly took its time in finding the right director, while also making sure that the script was in great shape.

Variety reports that Marvel met with multiple contenders for the job before selecting Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The studio met with the directing pair multiple times and were thoroughly impressed with their approach to the title character, a.k.a. Carol Danvers. Nicole Perlman

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to Direct “Captain Marvel”

Brie Larson as Captain Marvel: Fan art made by BossLogic

We finally know who’s going to helm “Captain Marvel.” After months of speculation and rumors, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have been announced as the directors of the highly anticipated Marvel project starring Oscar winner Brie Larson. Variety broke the news.

Best known for writing and directing critically acclaimed indies “Mississippi Grind” and “Half Nelson,” Boden and Fleck have been collaborating for over a decade. The biggest production budget they’ve worked with is probably $8 million for 2010’s “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” and “Captain Marvel’s” budget is sure to exceed $100 million, so this is a big step up for the twosome. The married couple has historically gravitated towards intimate character-driven dramas, so it will be very interesting to see their take on a special effects-laden blockbuster.

“Marvel made it clear they wanted a female guiding the ship on this film’s voyage,” Variety writes. Last summer, The Hollywood Reporter revealed the shortlist of directors being considered for the gig: Niki Caro (“The Zookeeper’s Wife”), Lesli Linka Glatter (“Homeland”), and Lorene Scafaria (“The Meddler”).

We like to think Larson played a part in ensuring “Captain Marvel” has a woman at its helm. The “Room” actress was recently asked how she thinks that depictions of female characters can improve, and she emphasized the need to focus on who works behind the scenes. Larson observed, “I think the best place to start would be more female film directors.”

According to Variety, Marvel “met with multiple contenders for the directing job, and sources say that [they] not only wanted to make sure that the search was thorough, but that the script was in the right shape before signing a director.” Boden and Fleck reportedly impressed Marvel “with their vision for the heroine.”

Meg LeFauve (“Inside Out”) and Nicole Perlman (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) are currently penning “Captain Marvel’s” script, “which follows Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection, and flight.”

When we asked Boden her advice for other female directors, she said, “I guess the first thing that comes to mind would go for any director, which is to try to be yourselves as directors — whether you’re in the room with a potential financier or on set with your actors.” The two-time Independent Spirit Award nominee continued, “Sometimes there can be the tendency to imagine the qualities that a director is supposed to possess and try to act in the way that perfect director would act, but I always find people respond to me best when I put away those ideas of who I should be and start embracing who I am, complete with all my strengths as well as my vulnerabilities.”

Captain Marvel” is expected to hit theaters March 8, 2019.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to Direct “Captain Marvel” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
