On April 20, 2010, BP's Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded killing eleven men and unleashing over 200 million gallons of oil into the water. The U.S. Coast Guard immediately approved the use of a highly toxic compound called Corexit to be applied by BP to disperse the oil and ostensibly to prevent the oil from saturating the marshes and shorelines throughout the U.S. Gulf coastal region. Three months later the leaking wellhead was finally capped and the public was assured that the water, seafood and beaches were safe. This is far from the truth.
