Industry rues the demise of eOne and salutes its legacy

‘Top End Wedding.’

The disappearance of eOne from the theatrical distribution landscape in Australia/New Zealand is being lamented by exhibitors, producers, former staffers and even rival distributors.

The demise of the distributor known for its sharp commercial tastes marks the end of an era dating back to 2002 with the founding of Hopscotch Films by Troy Lum, Frank Cox and Sandie Don.

Despite the parent company’s assurances, eOne’s exit almost certainly means there is one less avenue for Australian producers seeking finance and distribution.

Goalpost PicturesRosemary Blight, who collaborated with the firm on Wayne Blair’s The Sapphires and Blair’s upcoming Top End Wedding, describes eOne’s withdrawal from the Australian market as a great loss.

“From the days of Hopscotch to transforming into eOne, Sandie Don, Troy Lum and their incredible team have bought passion and intelligence to the distribution landscape,” she tells If.

U.S. Drama ‘Green Book’ Touted as Oscar Win for China
Chinese companies have been quick to claim their share of Oscar glory since Sunday’s ceremony, despite an awards season that largely shut out films from or about Asia, including “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Shoplifters.”

Alibaba Pictures, the heavily loss-making film financing and production arm of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, is busily talking up its involvement in best picture winner “Green Book.” The production company boarded the movie as an investor alongside Participant Media, Dreamworks Pictures and Amblin Partners (of which Alibaba is a minority owner) last summer. The film was nominated for five Oscars and won three Sunday, including best original screenplay and best actor in a supporting role. It will hit Chinese theaters on Friday.

“Even though Alibaba Pictures is a relatively new entrant into Hollywood, we have a track record of choosing quality projects that not only have high entertainment value, but also have positive messages we believe in,

Bo Report: ‘Stan & Ollie’ not so jolly as ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ wins again

Stan & Ollie

British audiences embraced Stan & Ollie, not least because the charming biopic of comic duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy is set in the UK, while Us moviegoers were far less enthused.

Australians’ sentiments towards the comedic drama starring Steve Coogan and John C Reilly seem somewhere in the middle, judging by its fourth-ranked opening last weekend.

Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel easily retained top spot in its second weekend but is not performing at the level here or internationally which the studio needs to recoup the $US170 million production budget and hefty marketing costs.

Mindblowing Films’ Bollywood adventure comedy Total Dhamaal began brightly but there were minimal contributions from the other openers including Umbrella’s Lords of Chaos and Madman Entertainment’s Vox Lux.

Umbrella launched Nicholas Wrathall’s feature documentary Undermined: Tales From The Kimberley on limited sessions at eight cinemas, fetching a modest $19,000 including previews.

Armie Hammer Denies ‘Batman’ Casting, Hasn’t Even Been Asked About the Role

Armie Hammer Denies ‘Batman’ Casting, Hasn’t Even Been Asked About the Role
Slow down, internet. A widespread rumor that Armie Hammer is the leading contender to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming Warner Bros. tentpole “The Batman” has been denied by the actor himself. Speaking to Yahoo Movies UK during the European press tour for “On the Basis of Sex,” Hammer was asked about the rumor.

“No one who can actually give me the job has asked me if I’m interested,” Hammer said. “I don’t even know if they are done–they are still working on a script.”

The Hammer-as-Batman rumor went viral February 18 after a report titled “Armie Hammer Is In Final Talks To Be The Batman” was published as an exclusive by Revenge of the Fans. The website reported it had “received word that Warner Bros. and Armie Hammer had entered advanced talks about him being the star” of Matt Reeves’ upcoming tentpole. The Batman casting

Bo Report: Tepid debut for ‘Escape Room’ as ‘The Combination’ sequel struggles

‘The Combination Redemption’.

Sony’s psychological thriller Escape Room was the top title last weekend, yet with a mediocre result which would have normally seen the film opening at No. 5 or 6, as ticket sales continued to free fall.

Meanwhile the sequel to 2009 cult hit The Combination struggled to make an impact despite positive coverage by David Stratton and Fairfax Media’s Garry Maddox, underlining yet again the challenges facing most Aussie films which go out on limited screens with minimal P&A support.

Audiences are sick and tired of watching a vengeful Liam Neeson brandishing a gun, judging by the debuts of Cold Pursuit here and in the Us.

The Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex, eOne’s third last release before the distributor shuts at the end of March, fared Ok at upmarket locations but poorly at multiplexes.

A contender for the best foreign language Oscar,

As principal photography has commenced, Armie Hammer and Gary Oldman have joined Evangeline Lilly on the cast of Nicholas Jarecki‘s ‘Dreamland’.

Arbitrage filmmaker, Jarecki has written and directed the project, on the casting announcement Jarecki stated:

“The devastating impact of the opioid crisis reaches all corners of society, Gary, Armie, and Evangeline are the perfect performers to bring the human face of this epidemic to audiences everywhere.”

Watching Armie Hammer Watch ‘Call Me By Your Name’ Is As Perfect As It Sounds

Watching Armie Hammer Watch ‘Call Me By Your Name’ Is As Perfect As It Sounds
Call Me By Your Name” may have been the talk of Oscar season 2017-18, but its popularity continues to endure through 2019. Case in point: Armie Hammer is the cover star of British GQ’s March 2019 issue, and much of the interview is devoted to his role in Luca Guadagnino’s beloved gay romance, and not any of his more recent projects. GQ even got Hammer to sit down and be recorded while he watches select scenes from “Call Me By Your Name,” and the results are as charming as one might expect. And yes, the actor cracks a smile every time Timothée Chalamet shows up on screen.

Since starring in “Call Me By Your Name,” Hammer has gone on to appear in “Sorry to Bother You” and “On the Basis of Sex.” Upcoming releases for the actor include “Hotel Mumbai,” the terrorism drama in which he stars opposite Dev Patel.
