Slow-moving and provoking Science-Fiction movie about a prison spaceship travelling outside the solar system.
22 February 2019 | by ma-cortesSee all my reviews

Slow-moving and provoking Science-Fiction movie about a group of criminals who accept a mission as Guinea pigs in outer space . A thought-provoking and brooding Sci-Fi movie , being set in deep space outside the solar system. Monte (Robert Pattison) and his daughter Willow live together aboard a spacecraft, in complete isolation. They are Guinea pigs sent on a dangerous mission . They are members of a crew of prisoners - death row inmates (André Benjamin , Mia Goth , Claitre Tran , among others) along with the suspect Dr. Dibs (Juliette Binoche) . There all passengers on the spaceship are wearing uniforms with the number 7 on it. They find themselves in the most unimaginable situation after a sun storm and cosmic ray hit the ship . And a few people remain .

Intelligent but boring Sci-Fi with a complex and hard plot , it takes place in outer space , beyond the solar system in a future that seems like the present in which a group of inmates to become the subjects of a human reproduction experiment. There a father and a daughter , together , approach their destination - the black hole in which time and space cease to exist. The movie title ¨High life¨comes from 'High' stands for outer space and 'Life' for the life Juliette Binoche character wants to create. The prisioners/protagonists are killers and thieves , and facing off themselves . The picture deals with some astronomy phenomenon as Worm holes, the expanding universe, the Big Bang versus the Big Bounce and other universe theories that make you feel like living and understanding the mystery of the world . The flick has some erotic scenes ,though it is about sexuality, not sex , but sensuality . Despite it's divisive reactions from the public , the film was well received from film critics , if other reviewers have panned it . Acceptable main and support cast . Robert Pattison gives a so-so acting as a father whose strict self-discipline is a shield against desire and accompanied by his daughter struggle to survive in deep space where they live in isolation that experiences the birth of an all-powerful love. Juliette Binoche delivers the best acting as the unsettling and suspicious doctor Dibs . Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche formerly appeared together in David Cronenberg's Cosmópolis (2012) as a billionaire and a mistress . Along with a nice support cast providing brief performances such as : André Benjamin , Claire Tran , Victor Banerjee , Lars Eidinger , Agata Buzekand Mia Goth .

It packs a rare , bizarre musical score by Stuart Staples and Tindersticks . And evocative , adequate cinematography by Yorick Le Saux and Tomasz Naumiuk . Being shot in Bialystok, Podlaskie, Poland (location) and Cologne, Germany .The motion picture was regularly directed by Claire Denis and she attempted to avoid special effects as much as possible. Being Claire Denis's first English language film after 13 feature films in French . She has directed a few French movies as Beau travail ,35 rhums , The Intruder , Bastards , Friday Night , Nénette et Boni and Un beau soleil intérieur , again with Juliette Binoche . This ¨High Life¨ had world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2018 and it caused multiple walkouts during it's screening because of how graphically disturbing and provocative it was. Rating : 5.5/10 . Acceptable and passable , but dull .
