Movie Review – The Sisters Brothers (2018)

The Sisters Brothers, 2018.

Directed by Jacques Audiard.

Starring John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Riz Ahmed, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rutger Hauer, Rebecca Root and Carol Kane.

Synopsis:

In 1850s Oregon, the infamous duo of assassins, Eli and Charlie Sisters, chase a gold prospector and his unexpected ally.

Ah, the western, a once hyper-popular genre reduced to a once or twice a year novelty. How the mighty fall. But at least they don’t fall too far. For the past few years, the steady trickle of westerns has at least given us a few good movies – see Hostiles, Bone Tomahawk, and Django Unchained – and one damn near perfect video game. So does this year’s first and perhaps only major entry into the genre maintain this narrow stream’s steady flow? Eh, I guess.

The Sisters Brothers follows Eli and Charlie sisters (John C Riley and Joaquin Phoenix) as they track down their latest bounty,

UK box office preview: 'Shazam!', 'Pet Sematary' among challengers to 'Dumbo'

UK box office preview: 'Shazam!', 'Pet Sematary' among challengers to 'Dumbo'
New Peppa Pig film, Jacques Audiard’s The Sisters Brothers also opening.

There’s no obvious front-runner at the UK box office this weekend, with Warner Bros’ superhero feature Shazam!, Paramount’s Stephen King adaptation Pet Sematary, eOne’s family property Peppa Pig: Festival Of Fun, and Lionsgate’s Missing Link all new on release.

They will challenge Disney’s Dumbo, which opened with a solid £6.1m last weekend.

There’s good buzz around Shazam!, and, as an unconventional comic book feature, the film could provide a good stop-gap for superhero fans now eagerly anticipating the conclusion of the Avengers series on April 24.

Cinematographer Benoit Debie Has Become the Master of Color

Cinematographer Benoit Debie Has Become the Master of Color
When Harmony Korine first talked to cinematographer Benoit Debie about shooting “Spring Breakers,” he told his future collaborator that he wanted the cinematography to be the star of film and push further than anything he had done before. For Debie, whose work more than any other cinematographer of his generation has been defined by his bold use of color, the idea of a director asking him to reach for colors, and an intensity of color, not normally seen on screen was a dream come true. Five years later, when Korine returned to Debie to discuss “The Beach Bum,” he wanted more of the same.

“Compared to ‘Spring Breakers,'” said Debie in an interview with IndieWire. “Harmony said on this one you have to go even further.”

Returning to Florida to make an even more colorful film was of course appealing, but the blissful mood of “The Beach Bum” was
