A Game of Checkers
7 May 2017 | by ThomasDrufkeSee all my reviews

After a week, I think I'm starting to understand where the plot is going, in some regard. I can't say that will always be the case, but this episode was a tad easier to follow than last week. But I still have no idea what's going on with the character, Bilquis. Then again, I'm not sure many people do. Tonight saw Shadow and Wednesday take a road trip down to Chicago to recruit another god for the war against the new gods. Don't think I ever thought I would say such a sentence, but here we are. The road trip itself was pretty entertaining, and really anything that has Ian McShane monologuing will gain my interest. The guy is just so dang good. But the same can be said for Ricky Whittle as Shadow. I had never heard of him prior to the show, but he's developing some strong charisma on the show. Considering he's kind of the character most like the audience, it's very hard not to like him. There's something about having your lead character basically going through the events of the episode with as little as information as the audience, makes for a great watch. Shadow is exactly that. We were introduced to another god, Czernoborg, who wasn't too keen on leaving for Wednesday's escapade, so he played a game of checkers with Shadow to decide if he had to accompany them or not. Yes, I said checkers. Again, I'm not always sure I know exactly what's going on. Anyway, that was pretty much your episode. A fun road trip for Wednesday and Shadow, some shenanigans with Bilquis, a checker board, and a phone text message, and you have your 60 minutes. For now, I'm intrigued with the obscure plot, fantastic visuals, and strange tie-ins to historical events. Count me in.
