Poland, 1990. The winds of change are blowing in Poland. The first euphoric year of freedom, but also of uncertainty for the future. Four apparently happy women of different ages decide it's time to change their lives, fight for their happiness and fulfill their desires. Agata is a young mother, trapped in an unhappy marriage, who seeks refuge in another, impossible relationship. Renata is an older teacher fascinated with her neighbor Marzena - a lonely former local beauty queen, whose husband works in Germany. Marzena's sister Iza is a headmistress in love with the father of one of her students.
In a world that rapidly changes, in early '90s post-Communist Poland, with the Berlin Wall gone and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, right on the verge of a fascinating transcendental stage, four different women experience an utterly different reality as they sink deeper into self-oppression and despair. Agata, a young married mother, is consumed daily by her unhappy marriage and an almost obsessive infatuation for an unreachable man, while Iza, a frigid school Principal, after six long years of a secret affair with the father of one of her students, battles with rejection and craves closure. On the other hand, her sister Marzena, a 1986 beauty pageant winner, nowadays an aerobic instructor and an aspiring model, is a woman who suffers from her husband's long absence as a worker in Germany. Lastly, Renata, a middle-aged language teacher and a lonely recluse, finds refuge in caring for her singing birds and her silent and ulterior longing for Marzena, her next-door neighbour and the object of her desire. In the end, as the piercing sadness of the unrequited love, the bitterness, the obsession and the distance linearly connects the four women, it is without a doubt, that they all chase the magnificent, yet, elusive Love, sadly, in all the wrong places.
