Whilst Professor Amory unveils his chess-playing computer Jason and crime novelist Kent Finn signs copies of his latest book, the body of Dr Nielsen, a member of the computer team, is dragged from the river and some time later a series of drownings is discovered at the local baths. The pattern of the murders suggests a serial killer with a knowledge of chess moves, and Morse finds a link between one of the victims and another member of Amory's team with a further possible connection to Finn. However, Morse deduces, with some help from Jason, that the culprit is not a random killer but one seeking vengeance on those he believed wronged him in the past. At the same time, Morse feels unable to comfort Thursday and his wife after their daughter Joan mysteriously left them.

Several contributors have noted the references to Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", but another Kubrick film is referenced when we are told that Dr. Castle has mis-typed a computer instruction which should have been "Re: Drum". Take out the colon, and it becomes "Redrum", the mysterious word written in blood on a mirror which appears in the psychic visions endured by young Danny Torrence in "The Shining" (1980). There, the word is, of course, a mirror image of the word "Murder"; in the context of this "Endeavour" segment, it serves as an indirect clue to the killer's identity. See more
The tape drives associated with the JASON computer have bright seven segment red LED displays showing a four digit value. Such displays were not available at the time. See more

In my country also, people drown. Sometimes even by accident.
In the closing credits certain letters of crew members' names are colored in red. When read in order, they spell "KINGS GAMBIT," which is a reference to an opening chess move [E4-E5-F4] called the King's Gambit. The killer tampered with the lockers numbered E4, E5, and F4 at the Cowley Baths as a coded message. See more
