Storyline

Daphne, 31, Londoner. Busy days, hectic nights, friends, people, lovers, are all welcome distractions from the constant and creeping feeling that her life is somehow stuck. Too young too settle quietly, too old to keep on messing about without aim. One night, an unexpected event slowly but steadily forces her to confront this existential limbo head on, and start looking very closely at the person she has become.

Flat and poorly written
27 August 2018 | by shakercoolaSee all my reviews

Daphne is a sardonic, self-centred, big city thirtysomething who witnesses a terrible crime up close. Some may say Daphne's personality is well observed, but for the audience there is not much in the way of redeeming features - some scenes irritate with a feeling of knowingness and affectation. The crux of it is that the film is dragged down painfully by dialogue which is redundant, overwordy and clotted with expletives. Some scenes offer nothing more than croaky, garrulous psychobabble. Daphne is more interested in sex with strangers, illegal drugs, alcohol and not caring any more about other people or herself - this is an interesting concoction and Emily Beecham's performance is creditable, conveying the idea that pleasure sought from people of her age is too unattractive to pursue, because some modern men are soulless and lack good judgement.
