Patricia Arquette Gets Double Acting Emmy Nom For ‘The Act’ & ‘Escape At Dannemora’

Patricia Arquette Gets Double Acting Emmy Nom For ‘The Act’ & ‘Escape At Dannemora’
Patricia Arquette has doubled down in the Emmys nominations list this year, with nods for both her leading role in Showtime’s prison-based limited series Escape at Dannemora and for her supporting role in Hulu’s limited series The Act—both were based on real-life characters.

The last actress Emmy-nominated in two categories in the same year like this was Allison Janney in 2016, for Mom and Masters of Sex—a duo of awards she also actually won in 2014. Double nominations have been an interesting Emmy quirk in other instances too. For example Elisabeth Moss was nominated in 2013 for both her lead roles in Top of the Lake and in Mad Men. She was then expected to get another double nom in 2017 for The Handmaid’s Tale and for the second season of Lake, however, only the former was ultimately recognized.

In the Ben Stiller-directed Escape at Dannemora, Arquette plays Joyce Mitchell,

Quentin Tarantino on the Movies and Stars That Inspired ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’

Quentin Tarantino on the Movies and Stars That Inspired ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’
“We can have a real ’60s summer here, setting up for it,” said Quentin Tarantino as he settled in for a nearly three-hour conversation about his July programming at his New Beverly Cinema, a survey of the 1960s films that inspired his forthcoming “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The movie is Tarantino’s love letter to the filmmaking era that made him fall in love with cinema as a kid. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to considerable acclaim. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” opens in theaters on July 26.

“I did that ’60s kinda thing, but now I wanted to get more into the interior of the Hollywood that this movie is discussing,” Tarantino told Pure Cinema Podcast hosts Elric Kane and Brian Saur. Setting up “Hollywood,” he explains that DiCaprio plays an actor named Rick Dalton,

Sid Ramin, Oscar-Winning Composer-Arranger, Dies at 100
Composer-arranger Sid Ramin, a longtime associate of Leonard Bernstein who won an Oscar, an Emmy and a Grammy for his work in film, TV and theater, died of natural causes Monday (July 1) at his home in New York City. He was 100.

Ramin won a 1961 Academy Award for adapting the music of “West Side Story,” which he had originally orchestrated for composer Leonard Bernstein on Broadway in 1957 (with fellow arranger Irwin Kostal). He won a 1961 Grammy for the “West Side Story” soundtrack album, and a 1983 Daytime Emmy for music for TV’s “All My Children.”

Ramin’s musical career encompassed every aspect of show business. He started in the early days of live television, arranging for Milton Berle’s “Texaco Star Theatre” from 1948 to 1956. “There was no second take,” Ramin once reminisced about the insane pace of live TV. “What you did was on the air, good or bad.”

Tony Awards Video: Pose's Billy Porter Belts Gypsy During a Commercial Break

Tony Awards Video: Pose's Billy Porter Belts Gypsy During a Commercial Break
The category is… karaoke realness.

Pose star Billy Porter delivered what may have been the Tony Awards’ most entertaining moment on Sunday night — but it didn’t air during the broadcast.

As Tonys host James Corden explained on Monday’s Late Late Show, he had enlisted Porter (a 2013 Tony winner for Kinky Boots) to do some Broadway-themed karaoke during one of the show’s commercial breaks. Porter, who was immediately game, selected “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from the musical Gypsy, and frankly, the performance that followed should get its own Tony nomination at this time next year.

‘What/If’ Review: Renée Zellweger’s Netflix Soap Is Exquisite, Binge-Worthy Trash

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains mild spoilers for “What/If” Season 1, in that any details about the twist-heavy plot are technically spoilers.]

It actually takes a lot of hard, focused work to make a TV show so bad it’s good. Think of “Barry.” The excellent HBO comedy is only getting better, but Bill Hader is a great (Emmy-winning) actor being asked to portray a bad one. Sure, the “SNL” veteran knows what a bad actor looks like — he was, after all, still part of the cast when Gerard Butler hosted — but he also knows what makes bad acting entertaining. “Barry” is filled with awful performances used toward brilliant comedy, whether it’s the tone deaf choices of his acting class or Barry trying to act (aka lie) in his day-to-day life.

Now, instead of just one element of the show being bad, imagine an entire series built from that same qualitative mentality. Putting all those pieces together is difficult, let alone finding a story to support them, but “What / If” does exactly that.
