Too bad they didn't also clone Monster Hunter's combat
15 April 2016 | by residentgrigoSee all my reviews

Final Fantasy Explorers is being written off as another Monster Hunter clone (which it is) but i find it better in certain aspects. The gameflow and ease of use are superior and the appeal of "iconic" FF elements can't be overlooked either. The problem is that the combat cloned PSO instead. I may not be a big fan of Capcom's yearly grind but they nailed the combat and the simple battle system of this game can't keep up. The lack of a presentation and the over-reliance on material grinding is also unfortunate but FFE does one aspect way better than most such hand-held games. The single player campaign is actual playable due to the monsters one can raise and bring along. I thus bothered to finish the game which surprised even me and it is better than any of the Crystal Chronicles forefathers. Soul Sacrifice and the Ys games may be a bit superior and the sequel will need to improve on these criticism for me to return but worthwhile Action-RPGs got rare on handhelds so i can ultimately recommend the game. 7,5/10
