Storyline

Animal Reunions have captured the imaginations of millions of people worldwide. YouTube is full of animal reunion stories - moments that illustrate and capture genuine affection and emotion between and among species. These rare moments provide a fleeting window into the emotional capacities of animals and their ability to form bonds with humans. But can wild animals really feel joy, devotion and love? Most animal lovers are convinced that they do, and now scientists are beginning to agree as we discover the stories that bring those animal emotions to life. We meet orphaned elephants in Kenya who have learned to trust their nursery keepers even after they lost their families at the hand of man - and witness a deep bond revealed as the head keeper travels to the National Park to see if his fully grown elephants remember him. We meet Damian Aspinall, the first man to release a captive-bred family of gorillas back to the wild, and see his reunion with one of those gorillas, proving a bond...

How endearing!

This episode of "Nature" is one about the lasting bond of friendship between certain human caretakers and scientists and the animals with whom they made a lasting bond. All involve animals either studied in the wild or rehabilitated and placed back in the wilds of Africa, and then months or years later human and animal friend are reunited. The animals show what is undeniably friendship, affection, trust. Not only is this true of chimpanzees, who share 98% of their DNA with humans, but it is shown to be true of certain elephants and cheetahs. In the case of the cheetah, her human friend was a wildlife photographer and she had been "missing" for six months. When he finally caught up with her he found there was good reason for her disappearance. She had become a mother. Not only did the cheetah show trust towards the photographer, but she allowed her human friend to interact closely with her cubs. There is also quite a bit of commentary by Jane Goodall who was doing research about such relationships in the 1950s when many questioned her conclusions.

Nature is in the season for repeats right now, and it is wonderful that they show some of their more special episodes during this time.
