Fleeing their doomed warren, a colony of rabbits struggle to find and defend a new home.
Set in the idyllic rural landscape of southern England, the adventure tale follows a band of rabbits on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, toward a promised land and a more perfect society.
A warren of rabbits is living a happy and peaceful existence until one, Fiver, has a vision of a catastrophe about to befall it. His brother, Hazel, convinces a group of rabbits to leave the warren and follow him. They are seeking a safer place to live but the journey to safety is beset on all sides by danger, sometimes from the least expected sources. However, thanks to Fiver, they also know their destination: Watership Down.
A clairvoyant rabbit named Fiver and his brother escape a less-than-perfect society in their old warren with the help of a few others when he has a vision that it will be destroyed violently by mans machinery. Hardship and growth ensue as the group heads for the destined Watership down of which Fiver has a vision. Strange warrens and ever stranger rabbits lurk along the path toward their destination with other creatures afoot as well, ultimately leading to a battle for the right to exist on ones own terms and as a free rabbit with a free and purely happy society.
