The High Command valued these islands far, far more than the Allies.

I appreciated this episode of "Nazi Mega Weapons" because I cannot recall before having seen a show that talks about the fate of the Channel Islands during WWII. In hindsight, it would seem that the British abandoning them was a GREAT strategy because although they really had no importance in the overall war effort, Hitler and the Nazis wasted incredible resources militarizing and fortifying the islands. Not surprisingly, the Allies simply bypassed the islands.....and 37,000 German troops mostly had nothing to do other than watch and wait. Sadly, over 4000 slave laborers were killed here creating this mega-fortress.

In addition to appreciating the subject matter, I also enjoyed watching the one expert as he walked about the gun emplacements and discussed how they army used trolleys to transport shells.....he was just so excited! It almost looked and sounded like a child on Christmas morning! Overall, well worth seeing and quite interesting.
