'There’s hugs and nice bits': new Top Gear aims for emotional depth

Latest lineup say they are ‘bringing a different vibe’ as they try to halt ratings slump

Racial slurs, culturally insensitive jokes and a punch-up overshadowed the final years of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May’s reign on Top Gear. But the new lineup of Freddie Flintoff, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness aims to modernise the BBC’s multimillion-pound brand, countering the toxic masculinity that often beset it in the past by giving the show “emotional depth”.

In contrast to Clarkson and co’s Amazon show The Grand Tour, which the singer Will Young criticised recently for its “shaming homophobic narratives”, the new series of Top Gear, which begins on 16 June, features Flintoff, Harris and McGuinness embracing other cultures and each other amid the banter and fast cars.

Amazon Prime Video To Be Integrated Into Liberty Global’s Virgin Media Cable Service In The UK

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Good Omens and Jack Ryan are set to be made available to Virgin Media TV subscribers in the UK after parent company Liberty Global struck a deal with Amazon Prime Video.

The Amazon Prime Video app is to be integrated into Virgin Media’s Ultra HD V6 set-top box, marking the first deal in Europe between the two companies. Cable operator Virgin Media has 4M subs in the country.

It comes ahead of Amazon Prime Video’s forthcoming Premier League coverage, meaning sports fans will be able to watch all of the English soccer games in one place. The partnership starts in the summer and subscribers will be required to pay separately for the Svod service.

Jay Marine, Vice President, Amazon Prime Video Europe said, “We have made it even easier for our customers to enjoy Prime Video including Amazon Originals like The Grand Tour, The

Virgin Media Partners With Amazon, Integrates Prime Video App

  • Variety
Virgin Media is adding the Amazon Prime Video app to its TV service. The Liberty Global-owned cabler will integrate the app into its ultra HD settop from this summer, meaning customers with the high-end box can access Prime Video directly. Virgin Media will be the first Liberty Global pay TV business to integrate Amazon’s streaming service in this way.

Virgin Media already bundles Netflix with its service. The Amazon deal means Virgin Media subs will be able to access Amazon’s originals and library shows as well as its Premier League coverage when that kicks off – the streamer landed a package of soccer rights in the last rights auction.

The deal comes as the legacy pay-tv players look to work with the streamers, bundling their services with their own or integrating the Svod players’ apps. Virgin Media counterparts Sky and BT have both pacted with the U.S.

Whether Amazon will put more gas in the tank is being discussed. “Genuinely, we love working for Amazon and they made it absolutely plain they love working with us,” Clarkson said at a London event for the new season. “We’re very popular on the feed, so we’re talking now about the future.
