In the teacher's lounge, you can see the date "April 3, 1978" on the chalkboard. Later in the episode, Will asks Holden what the interviewee is listening to. Holden replies "Bittaker and Norris". Referencing the killers Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris. These men killed five teenagers in the time span of June 24, 1979, to October 31, 1979. Making it impossible for them to have tapes on the killers. See more »

Debbie Mitford: Goffman says we wear these masks to make everyone else comfortable. Like you and your suits.
Holden Ford: We're not talking about my clothes again.
Debbie Mitford: Your suit is your uniform you wear to fit in at Quantico.
Holden Ford: I don't want to fit in.
Debbie Mitford: Everyone is trying to fit in.
Holden Ford: Guess that explains your hippie thing, too.
Debbie Mitford: My "hippie" thing?
Holden Ford: Your peasant tops, long hair, bracelets, leather sandals. Helps you assimilate on campus.
Debbie Mitford: Right. It's exactly the same.
Holden Ford: What would you wear if no one were looking?

Holden Goes Off the Track
21 October 2017 | by HitchcocSee all my reviews

The most significant focus of this episode is Holden's becoming aware of an elementary principal who disciplines his kids by tickling their feet, then giving them nickels. There is considerable controversy. Many parents and teachers feel he is just a good guy with a different method of approaching students. Others are very concerned. The point is that Holden has no business putting himself into this controversy, but he doesn't recognize. He has developed a big wall of jealousy with Debbie and this is darkening his world. She has a lab partner whom he doesn't know and who she says she just works with. Billl and Wendy are starting to worry about him. He is also in trouble with his supervisor who has green-lighted their work. It should be interesting to see how this shakes out. The principal is a pompous ass. Having been in education for over 40 years, I believe that his attitude toward his own methods would be educationally suicidal. The conclusion of this episode makes us aware that Holden could be in big trouble.
