Sardinia Festival Put Focus on Women in Film
Eva Longoria, Patricia Arquette, Claire Forlani, Marta Milans and Julia Stiles are among stars expected on the island of Sardegna (or Sardinia for English speakers) for the second edition of the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival, the Italian summer shindig celebrating the ongoing crossover between high-end film and TV content and the power of women driving that crossover. Festival runs June 13-16.

“I’m trying to give it a modern stamp,” says former Taormina Film Festival general manager Tiziana Rocca, who last year launched this innovative fest in the capital city of Cagliari and nearby Forte Village resort as an offshoot of her annual Filming in Italy/Los Angeles event that promotes Italian cinema, locations and talent.

Alternating movies and series, the 2019 edition will open with the Italian launch of Brian De Palma’s high-voltage thriller “Domino,” starring “Game of Thrones” alums Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Carice Van Houten — both expected to

Why Filming in Monte Carlo Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank

Home to the super-rich, the Monte Carlo quarter of Monaco has a long tradition as a filming location for projects that want to convey the glamorous lifestyles of the wealthy elite.

Just 1.24 miles across (about half the size of New York’s Central Park), Monte Carlo has nevertheless squeezed in an array of high-end productions, such as James Bond films “Never Say Never Again” and “Golden Eye,” “Ocean’s Twelve,” “Iron Man 2” and TV drama “Riviera.”

Many of them come for iconic Monte Carlo locations such as the Casino de Monte Carlo, the Hotel de Paris Monte Carlo and Casino Square, while taking in the yachts in the harbor and making the most of the approximately 330 days of sunshine on the French Riviera.

“Monaco adds a natural and inimitable touch of glamour and luxury to all films,” says Axel Hoppenot, exec VP of sales and marketing at the Monte-Carlo

Content Creators Get Ambitious in Peak TV, but Face Budget Challenges

Content Creators Get Ambitious in Peak TV, but Face Budget Challenges
How do producers, broadcasters, streaming platforms and distributors best take advantage of what is commonly agreed to be a time of peak content creation for television? That is a question the keynote speakers at the Variety European TV Summit will attempt to address when they gather for a one-day conference on June 13 at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel in Bayswater.

Gareth Neame, the executive chairman of “Downton Abbey” and “The Last Kingdom” producer at Carnival Films, says that, thanks to new platforms and rising budgets, producers are freer than ever to create ambitious and novel-like dramas rather than the artificial, low-budget shows that used to characterize scripted TV.

“There are plenty more opportunities — but competition is massive. Everyone is in this space,” says Neame, referring to the growth in the number of production companies pushing into drama. He adds that rising budgets mean the “stakes are now very high” for drama producers,

Emma Thompson to Star in Extinction Rebellion Climate-Change Satire (Exclusive)
Emma Thompson will play a climate-change activist in “Extinction,” a timely satirical short film that will include footage of the Extinction Rebellion group’s ongoing wave of action in London.

Two-time Oscar winner Thompson has herself been involved in the high-profile London-based protests. She addressed crowds over the weekend from Extinction Rebellion’s signature pink boat, which was placed in Oxford Circus, one of the British capital’s busiest intersections, and which will feature in the film. That was part of a series of protests by the group. Its activities are carrying on this week as it lobbies for action against climate change and ecological collapse.

Thompson will play a veteran environmentalist and a highly qualified member of Extinction Rebellion who secures a meeting with a senior government official. She and the Conservative Party lawmaker lock horns as protests and disruption take place outside.

Why Greta is Neil Jordan's First Film in 7 Years

Don Kaye Mar 2, 2019

We spoke with the director of The Crying Game and Interview with the Vampire about returning to the big screen.

French legend Isabelle Huppert is unleashed in Greta, in which she plays the title character: a desperate, lonely but unfortunately not-all-there woman seeking companionship and finding it, at least initially, with Frances (Chloe Grace Moretz), a waitress who recently moved into her friend’s (Maika Monroe) New York City loft and is grieving the loss of her mother.

When Frances finds Greta’s lost purse on the subway, she dutifully returns it to the woman at her Brooklyn apartment and they strike up a friendship. But the more Frances finds out about Greta, the less she wants to be around her -- a state of affairs that the increasingly unstable Greta will go to any length to change.

Greta is directed by Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan, something

Sky Drama Chief Cameron Roach On Scripted Plans, Development Pipeline & Finding The Next ‘Patrick Melrose’
Fresh from the success of drama hits such as Patrick Melrose and A Discovery of Witches, Sky drama chief Cameron Roach is looking to take advantage of a confidence at the Comcast-owned pay-tv giant as it looks to expand its scripted pipeline.

This comes after Roach was promoted to the top drama job, as revealed by Deadline this morning, following the departure of Anne Mensah to Netflix.

Roach, who worked under Mensah for over five years, admits that the next few years at Sky will be more of an “evolution” and a “continuation” of the strategy that the pair built together.

“I don’t think me stepping up means there’s going to be any kind of sea-change. Genuinely, we’re in a very confident place having built this over the last five years and I think now we have a good ecology of returning series and standalone event pieces.
