If you are going to examine the role of music manager then you will get none better than get Simon Napier-Bell to narrate it who has been managing artists since the 1960s and he has a few interesting stories to tell and certainly had a few close shaves.
You would think that music managers control the careers of their artists and look out for their best interests. This was not always the case, the manager was in it to make money for themselves. Colonel Tom Parker was an illegal immigrant who could not leave the USA, it means Elvis never toured outside of it and in retrospect Parker seemed to benefit more than Elvis with his business methods.
Some artists were managed by people with shady connections such as Don Arden who use thuggish tactics against any artists who crossed him or any promoter who threatened to take his acts away from him. Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath ended up marrying Arden's daughter Sharon Osbourne, she ended up managing Ozzy which caused a rift with her father.
The tide seemed to have turned when figures such as Peter Grant emerged who ended up managing Led Zeppelin and had the novel idea of putting his artists interest first. As the 1970s wore on it was the artists who began to take back control. Bruce Springsteen took on Jon Landau, who was primarily a journalist because he felt that Landau and he were on the same page as far as the direction The Boss wanted to go in.
In the past the music manager was a larger than life figure. Nowadays looking at Jonathan Dickins who manages Adele, he looks like someone who could be your next door neighbour.
This was a terrific and fascinating start to a series about the music business.
