At the time of the series finale, George R. R. Martin was still writing the sixth installment in the book series "The Winds of Winter" and had not yet begun writing the seventh and final installment "A Dream of Spring." Martin had intended to have the book series completed and published before the TV series caught up with it, but after failing to meet his Autumn 2015 deadline for submitting The Winds of Winter, the TV series began to progress into plotlines beyond the books with the premiere of the sixth season in 2016, plot elements that Martin had briefed showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff on in advance. Martin thereafter abandoned any deadline of completing both books before the show ended. See more
