Art imitating life: this movies' plot evolves around a drunk who gets into a car wreck. Joaquin Phoenix has experienced alcohol addiction and a car accident in real life as well. 1 year after he went into rehab, on January 26, 2006, Phoenix was in a car accident on a winding canyon road that overturned his car. The cause was due to a brake failure though and not due to drunk driving.
