Storyline

CRIES FROM SYRIA is a searing, comprehensive account of a brutal five-year conflict from the inside out, drawing on hundreds of hours of war footage from Syrian activists and citizen journalists, as well as testimony from child protesters, leaders of the revolution, human rights defenders, ordinary citizens, and high-ranking army generals who defected from the government. Their collective stories are a cry for attention and help from a world that little understands their reality or agrees on what to do about it. A documentary by Evgeny Afineevsky, director of the Oscar-nominated film WINTER ON FIRE, CRIES FROM SYRIA premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

N/A: Bashar Al-Assad thinks he is the right one and we are the wrong ones. He feels he owns Syria, and we are the ones killing people and bombing people. Now yea re in the third year. We all want to break the siege. But we didn't come here to eat. We cam here to die with honor. If they keep up the siege, it won't stop us. We fight and die standing on our feet. The war is worth fighting for and worth dying for. Let them do what they want, we're not scared. We are the people of the land, and the ...

I just watched this doc and it is very heavy. I try to watch everything I see in 2017 with a grain of salt. The graphic footage of bodies of children tortured and murdered was relentless, but I wondered why they weren't spending any time explaining the villains point of view. Why are Assad and Russia blowing them up? Simple question. The doc alludes to the idea that Russia claimed to be helping eradicate "ISIS" at Aleppo - meanwhile no ISIS were there. How does Assad explain his actions, especially early on when torturing & kidnapping 11 year old's for disrespectful graffiti? Who were his army at that point? And how? Maybe that's an entirely different doc, but I thought the whole thing seemed one sided. And perhaps rightly so. They sure did look like the heroes throughout.
