Heahmund must convince King Alfred that his actions are in defense of the crown; Ubbe and Torvi strengthen the position of the Vikings, but not all in the Viking camp support their strategy; another settler disappears in Iceland.
Heahmund discloses to King Alfred that Lord Cuthred was a traitor that was plotting to overthrow and kill him. King Alfred asks Bjorn, Lagertha and Ubbe to convert to the Christianity to smooth things over in his court and Ubbe and Torvi accepts the proposal. Floki faces problems in his settlement with another disappearance. Ivar the Boneless is completely insane and convinced that he is a God and Freydis' baby is his. He decides to make a sacrifice to the gods.
King Alfred has Heahmund jailed for murdering 'see usurper' Cuthred but believes his claim he was plotting with nobles to depose and murder Alfred and reinstates Heahmund 'left to God's justice' as bishop. As they guessed, Alfred' elder brother Aethelred agreed to succeed a murdered Alfred, but decides against it last minute during the war council to organize the defense of Wessex against an approaching Viking fleet lead by king Harald, who came from Kattegat to seek revenge by recruiting Ivar's garrison at York under earl (governor) Olavsonn, with whom he plots to overturn Ivar later. Ubbe and Torvi agree to Alfred's demand for their conversion, unlike 'dynastic ancestor' Odin-loyal Bjorn, who even questions if Ubbe is a true son of Ragnar and has mixed feelings when approached by Ragnar's Mercian bastard Magnus, who seeks vengeance against Alfred's dynasty which ousted him as a boy. In Iceland, Floki's visions are recognized and he seems to unite the feuding families over the expected common child of Helgi and Thorunn, a daughter of Kjetill, but soon she vanishes and is found murdered. In Kattegat, belittled Hvitserk can barely control his fury about Margrethe's murder. Ivar, fueled by pregnant Freydis who has 'Ivar's' baby's biological father strangled, declares himself a god and tells Hvitserk that he intends to perform a suitably great sacrifice, allegedly captured Lagertha. In fact she's in Wessex with Bjorn and Ubbe, honoring their promise to help fight off other Viking invaders to earn land, while Alfred is surprised his neglected Northumbrian bride remains eager to wed him, while Aethelred gets engaged to Cuthred's daughter.
