In several interviews, director Robert Schwentke explains why the "based on a true story" notion is only revealed half-way the movie. He wants us to reflect on what anyone of us could be capable of when put in a certain situation or a certain uniform. He also stresses that almost every scene in the movie corresponds to what he found in the archives of the British General Military Court of Oldenburg, Germany.
