Images from Cold War spy satellite show dramatic ice loss in the last forty years.

"When the United States launched its Hexagon Kh-9 surveillance satellites in the 1970s, the hope was to collect crucial intelligence on Soviet activities as they surveyed over 877 million square miles of the Earth’s surface. But these eyes in the sky ended up capturing images of a different threat to the future of the planet: the accelerating loss of ice on the Himalayas aka the world’s “third pole.” This phenomenon threatens the water supply of millions of people."

Exclusive Interview – Us composer Michael Abels on playing with silence, collaborating with Jordan Peele and more

Flickering Myth writer Justin Cook chats with composer Michael Abels ahead of today’s home video release of Us…

In hindsight, Jordan Peele’s Us had the thankless job of being the follow-up to the director’s previous directorial outing — indisputably one of the most culturally impactful films of the past decade — Get Out. It should have been disappointing by all accounts; it had every right to be. But Peele rose to the occasion once again and continued his journey of becoming the next great American horror maestro. However, it wasn’t just him whose status among the visionaries of the horror genre was solidified with the film’s massive success: his go-to composer Michael Abels is deserving of esteem and praise in equal measure.

Behind every great horror film is a great score, and Abels has crafted one of the best of the year. As diverse a soundtrack as any,

TV Review: 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards

  • Variety
Who are the MTV Movie (and TV) Awards for, exactly?

This is the question that kept rattling around my exhausted brain during Monday’s broadcast, which squeezed the ceremony (which happened live in Los Angeles on June 15) into two taut hours of waning pop culture references and supportive screaming. If it’s for Gen Z teens, as the heavy emphasis on Netflix originals like “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” suggested, why have Zachary Levi host? If it’s for adults, what’s with the “how do you do, fellow kids” vibe? The MTV Movie (and TV) Awards so thoroughly split the difference that there’s no clear target audience to speak of. Even Sandra Bullock (especially Sandra Bullock) seemed confused to be there accepting the award for “Best Frightened Performance,” formerly “Best Scared-As-Shit Performance,” for her turn in “Birdbox.” (Her scripted speech

MTV Movie & TV Awards Winners: The Complete List

  • Variety
The MTV Movie & TV Awards returned to television Monday, with host Zachary Levi and a number of pop culture favorites.

Dominating this year’s nominations with four apiece were front runners “Avengers: Endgame,” which took home the evening’s best movie award, and “Game of Thrones,” which won best show. The Oscar-nominated documentary “Rbg” also scored four nods but was overtaken by the evening’s best documentary winner “Surviving R. Kelly.”

This year’s show also featured three new categories: reality royalty (“Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta”), most meme-able moment (“The Bachelor”) and best real-life hero (Ruth Bader Ginsburg) in addition to the show’s new tradition — started in 2017 — which refrains from separating nominees by gender.

Additionally, Dwayne Johnson was honored with the Generation Award, and Jada Pinkett Smith took home the Trailblazer Award.

MTV has been giving out their fan-voted Golden Popcorn trophies since 1992, when James Cameron‘s blockbuster “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” was awarded Best Movie. Now there are separate categories for Best Movie, Best Performance in a Movie, Best Show and Best Performance in a Show, while other categories mix all achievements together.

‘The Twilight Zone’: How Jordan Peele Updated ‘Nightmare at 20,000 Feet’ for 2019

‘The Twilight Zone’: How Jordan Peele Updated ‘Nightmare at 20,000 Feet’ for 2019
Jordan Peele was the perfect filmmaker to bring back “The Twilight Zone,” melding his dark satire with Rod Serling’s. The result makes an uneasy bridge between past and present, where fear, paranoia, and hate continue to rip away at the fabric of American society. And this is apparent in “Nightmare at 30,000 Feet,” a re-imagining of the William Shatner-starrer, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” which slips comfortably beside Peele’s “Get Out” and “Us.”

For production designer Michael Wylie and editor Scott Turner, the challenge was to channel both Serling and Peele in this story of Ptsd-suffering journalist Justin Sanderson (Adam Scott), who discovers a strange podcast aboard Flight 1015 that predicts their crash which he inadvertently helps facilitate. “We wanted to pull in some of the flavor of the original, not only because it’s incredibly familiar to everyone but because we’re trying to create a timelessness in the show,

‘Men in Black’ and ‘Shaft’ Bombs Prove Not Every Movie Franchise Can Be Saved — Analysis

When the contents of the Sony hack were revealed in late 2014, the cache of documents revealed a number of previously unknown pieces of information about the company’s studio arm and its creative heads, including a number of bandied-about film ideas that had yet to be reported. Among them: the possibility that the studio would launch a comedy crossover that would marry its “Men in Black” franchise — then three films deep, all of which made big bucks at the box office — with its also-popular “21 Jump Street” movie series.

In leaked emails, “21 Jump Street” star Jonah Hill reportedly called the idea “clean and rad and powerful.” While it mostly sounded like Movie Franchise Mad Libs at the time, as the fourth film in the “MiB” franchise opened this weekend and promptly bombed, perhaps Sony should have pursued that idea instead.

In a summer rife with sequels, reboots, and “re-quels,

MTV Movie and TV Awards predictions 2019: Complete odds in all categories led by ‘Avengers,’ ‘Riverdale’ and more
Avengers: Endgame” is tied as the most nominated film at the MTV Movie and TV Awards with four bids, and we think it’ll win all of them when the awards air on June 17: Best Movie, Best Hero (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Villain (Josh Brolin) and Best Fight (Captain America vs. Thanos). That’s according to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have given us their forecasts here in our predictions center. Do you agree that the Marvel blockbuster will achieve a clean sweep?

These awards are decided by MTV fans voting online, so popularity counts for a lot, and it’s hard to get more popular than “Endgame,” which is the second-biggest moneymaker of all time domestically not accounting for inflation ($826 million), and the second-biggest worldwide too ($2.73 billion). In the last 13 years no movie has won without grossing at least $100 million at the domestic box office,

Candyman Will Both Stand Alone And Connect Back To The Original

Fans of the 1992 Candyman knew they were in for a treat once they heard the horror classic was being written by Jordan Peele. And now, it seems that the upcoming scream fest will function simultaneously as a standalone film and a spiritual sequel to the original.

Producer Ian Cooper explained in an interview:

“What we’re doing with Candyman and how Jordan is crafting it on the page is going to be very exciting and rewarding to audiences that haven’t seen the original film as well as people who’ve seen the original film. In a broad sense of the word, this film will stand alone if you’ve never heard of a film called Candyman and will dovetail in a pretty complicated and interesting way to the original. In short, I think this will really fit in with what we’re doing with Us and did with Get Out

‘Candyman’ Producer Says Jordan Peele’s Reboot Is Inspired By Toxic Fandom, Which Is “The Most Problematic Thing Facing The Genre”
When it was announced that Jordan Peele was producing a remake/reboot of the classic slasher film “Candyman,” many film fans were left scratching their heads. Peele, who has made a big name for himself in the horror genre with his films “Get Out” and “Us,” isn’t the first filmmaker you’d think of for a remake of a schlocky, not-so-great ‘90s horror film.

Candyman Reboot Will Address Toxic Fandom

The new version of Candyman is now gearing up for production, with Jordan Peele lending his talents to the Clive Barker adaptation. The movie is already generating questions about how it’ll update the storyline to incorporate contemporary issues, and one influence that Candyman will address head on is toxic fandom, at least according to Monkeypaw Creative Director Ian Cooper.

Speaking to Deadline at a conference panel, Cooper reflected on how Monkeypaw and Peele will continue the themes set up by their hits Get Out and Us. Cooper was candid about their desire to handle fan service, too, remarking as so:

“We talk a lot about fans and the idea of appeasing fans and when you do that and how do you do that and when do you not do that. I think my issue with fandom is that it’s really problematic. It’s probably the most problematic thing facing the genre.

New Candyman Movie Is Taking on Toxic Fandom
Jordan Peel's upcoming Candyman movie is going to address toxic fandom. Peele's MonkeyPaw productions creative director Ian Cooper recently discussed what horror fans can expect when the movie hits theaters next summer. It is believed production on the movie will begin in late August and last through September in Chicago. Original Candyman actor Tony Todd is on board and he promises applause-worthy moments. It has been reported, but not confirmed, that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be taking on the lead role.

Ian Cooper was asked about what fans can expect from a MonkeyPaw production of Candyman with Jordan Peele on board as producer. Peele has set a pretty high bar with Get Out and this year's Us, so many people are curious to see what the new movie will be about. Cooper started off explaining some of the thought process behind the project. He explains.

‘Candyman’ Producer Says New Film Will Address Toxic Fandom – Produced By
Jordan Peele is producing a new Candyman movie and has cast Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the new Candyman. Monkeypay Creative Director Ian Cooper was on a Produced By Conference panel The New Age of Producing Horror. Deadline asked Cooper how Candyman would fit in with what Monkeypaw has done with Get Out and Us. His answer, surprisingly, was that Peele wants to address how toxic fandom has become.

“We talk a lot about fans and the idea of appeasing fans and when you do that and how do you do that and when do you not do that,” Cooper said. “I think my issue with fandom is that it’s really problematic. It’s probably the most problematic thing facing the genre.”

Cooper is likely referring to fan petitions to remake the last season of Game of Thrones or fans bullying actors like Kelly Marie Tran online. Peele used Get

Blumhouse TV Previews ‘Unparalleled’ Brand Expansion, Including More Genres and Bigger Budgets

For a brand that’s become synonymous with indie horror, Blumhouse is quickly expanding its TV slate to more genres with bigger budgets.

“As Jeremy likes to say, ‘It’s not just horror, but what’s horrifying,'” co-present of Blumhouse Television Marci Wiseman said Friday afternoon, during the company’s panel presentation at the Atx Television Festival in Austin.

The broadened vision began years ago, when the TV studio was in its infancy and looking to expand upon Jason Blum’s success in independent horror films. Focused on selling projects to various networks, Blumhouse Television got off on the right foot with HBO’s psychological horror hit, “Sharp Objects.” Now, they’re gearing up for even more prestigious yet genre-shifting projects, starting with Showtime’s limited series on Roger Ailes, “The Loudest Voice.”

“We are the lucky beneficiaries of a brand expansion that’s truly unparalleled and unrivaled,” co-president Jeremy Gold said.
