Mollywood just need a few movies like this to advance in every levels of World Cinema. The film was special as both Rosshan Andrews and Nivin Pauly, played out from their typical safe zone (family movies). As everyone know, the main marketing of promotion for the movie was the guest appearance of The Complete Actor Mohanlal in the movie. With an immense budget of 45 crores, the film is the biggest motion picture in Malayalam so far.
The main plot of the movie was predictable as the story of the Indian Robin Hood, Kayamkulam Kochunni, was something that every Keralites knew actually. But, it was the making of the movie, that made it a different level cinema! Hats off to Rosshan, as he did a mind-blowing job as a director, previsualize this epic movie and to execute it in the most perfect manner. The choice of actor Nivin Pauly for the lead role, still creates confusion among crowd, but I, frankly, believe he has done a stellar performance in the film. He glittered well in the action sequences and has put his level best in the film.
As the plot was flowing predictably and somewhat mediocre, then comes the mega-mass entry of Lalettan, with a mesmerizing cowboy BGM. Pakki made Kochunni, whom he is today. Not just a guest appearance, he created the backbone of the movie and simply, one of the Best Cameos Mollywood has ever seen. Talking about the supporting cast, the leader of this department is Babu Antony. His performance in the climax, certainly deserve a loud applause. Sunny Wayne's Keshavan, was an entertaining villainous character, though had nothing to entertain his fans. Priya Anand, Manikandan Achari, Sudev Nair and Shine Tom Chacko had done justice to their respective roles.
Art Direction for a movie like this, must be creative and a treat for the audience. Vaishnavi, as always, deserve something more than applause, as she never let the audience feel it wasn't 1830 AD. Screenplay, as said above, had nothing new to offer but made few scenes commercial, than from the real story. The Biggest Credit of the movie is bagged by the Camera and audio departments. Almost every shot in the film was something more than 'visually beautiful'. Audio effects were too good, and I still remember the bass of an elephant step, that shivered me as well. Background music by Gopi Sundar was kidu! Music could settle at a category of above average, but the song at the climax, 'goosebumped' me!
Splitting the film into two halves, first half narrates the story of the son of a thief, who ran away from his home to fill his belly; story of the place where he settled afterwards; story of his passion for Kalaripayattu, story of his romance. Second half indeed justifies the need for the title. Climax was lit, and made the audience leave the theatre with a positive mind.
Kayamkulam Kochunni is a historical period drama that entertains all type of audience, and could really enjoy the making of the movie, though the screenplay is familiar. I really think it is a must watch movie among our family audience, as it narrates the pre-independence history of Kerala.
