Jon Stewart Delivers Impassioned Speech for 9/11 First Responders at Congressional Hearing

Jon Stewart Delivers Impassioned Speech for 9/11 First Responders at Congressional Hearing
It’s been four years since he stepped away from “The Daily Show,” but Jon Stewart is showing that he can still have an effect on national political matters.

Stewart testified before a House Judiciary committee on Tuesday afternoon, speaking to the ongoing need to fund medical care for first responders who worked around the World Trade Center site on and after September 11, 2001.

“Five seconds. That’s how long it took for Fdny, for NYPD, for Port Authority, for Ems to respond to an urgent need from the public. Five seconds. Hundreds died in an instant. Thousands more poured in to continue to fight for their brothers and sisters,” Stewart said in an impassioned testimony before the committee. “They did their jobs with courage, grace, tenacity, humility. Eighteen years later, do yours.”

In the almost two decades since 9/11, Stewart has worked independently of his former “Daily Show” hosting duties to

Comedian Jacqueline Novak Sets Off Broadway Run With Comedy World On Its Knees

Exclusive: Comedian Jacqueline Novak will launch a new Off Broadway comedy at The Cherry Lane Theatre in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village this summer, and if the title and subject matter don’t get your attention, the comedy world support certainly will.

Executive produced by Mike Birbiglia and presented by Natasha Lyonne, Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees debuts July 10, with an official opening set for July 22. The limited engagement runs through Aug. 18.

The official description: Get On Your Knees is the most high-brow show about blowjobs you’ll ever see. Novak spins her material on the femininity of the penis and the stoicism of the vulva into an unexpectedly philosophical show that’s part feminist outcry, part coming-of-age tale of triumph.

Ira Glass has called the show a “nearly Talmudic dissection of a subject. Really funny and just really like nothing else.” Amy Schumer says Novak’s comedy “is the

‘My Dad Wrote a Porno’ Trailer: HBO Brings Hit Comedy Podcast to the Stage
When friends Jamie Morton, James Cooper, and Alice Levine first started to unpack the thorny, metaphor-drenched enigma that is “Belinda Blinked,” they probably didn’t think that it would lead to an event in a packed theater that would eventually be aired on HBO.

Yet, as the trailer below proves, that’s what ended up happening when the trio did a special live reading for fans at the Roundhouse in London early last month. As on the trio’s podcast, Morton reads selections from a series of erotic novels written by his real-life father under the pseudonym Rocky Flintstone. Levine and Cooper’s reactions help power the show, which has gained a high-profile set of listeners, prompting guest appearances from the likes of Hayley Atwell, Daisy Ridley, Michael Sheen, and others.

This March performance was far from the first time the three have taken their show on the road — “My

‘Euphoria’ Teaser: Zendaya and Drake Team Up to Find That Elusive Feeling

‘Euphoria’ Teaser: Zendaya and Drake Team Up to Find That Elusive Feeling
Get ready to feel the “Euphoria.” Drake and Future the Prince’s upcoming teen drama starring singer and actress Zendaya (lately of “The Oa” and “The Greatest Showman”) will be coming to HBO later this year. If a teaser the network released on Thursday is any indication, it’s going to be quite a trippy ride.

Set to the song “Hex” by Ark Patrol, the teaser gives a hint of some of the fun — and trouble — a group of high school students will have as they live in a world far removed from any John Hughes movie. Sam Levinson, who wrote and directed the bleak and violent “Assassination Nation,” will bring his sinister style to “Euphoria” as writer and executive producer on the project. Although it’s unclear how closely HBO’s series will hew to the Israeli show it’s based on, the original had plenty of sex, drugs,

Get Ready to Bookmark the 2 Dope Queens' Self-Care Advice and Revisit It on the Daily
Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams might be saying goodbye to 2 Dope Queens after its upcoming second season, but they're doing anything but disappearing. The duo, who vaulted their popular podcast to a series of HBO specials, are bringing the project to an end after its second season for a good reason: they're just too damn busy with their various books, TV writing gigs, and movie roles.

We caught up with Jessica and Phoebe at an HBO brunch in their honor at Sundance, where we also witnessed a panel discussion between the dopest of queens and CNN political commentator Angela Rye. The panel covered everything from hair braiding and beatboxing to Michelle Obama - a former guest on the podcast - whom Jessica said "was very hydrated. Her skin was like mmmmmmm. Like when you bite into candied yams and you're like, 'These are amazing.'"

Speaking of women in politics,

Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson on Letting the ‘Magic’ of ‘2 Dope Queens’ Shine
Ever since a chance meeting in 2014, Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson have taken their collaborative friendship to higher and higher heights. Their “2 Dope Queens” show, featuring stand-up sets from talented friends, became a popular Wnyc podcast and toured the country. In February 2018, that podcast became a series of HBO comedy specials, filmed in Brooklyn’s vaunted Kings Theatre, which seats thousands.

The second season of “2 Dope Queens” premieres on Friday, with a new futuristic set and celebrity guests like Lupita Nyong’o and Keegan-Michael Key. On Dec. 5, the morning after taping Key’s episode (“Regal Af”), Williams and Robinson hosted a celebratory brunch in partnership with Girls Write Now, a New York-based non-profit that pairs underserved girls with engaged mentors, to talk about everything from creating the show to honing their self-care routines. Later, they sat down with Variety to discuss coming back to HBO for seconds.

For the second batch of specials,

Sundance: HBO Films Acquires ‘Share’ From A24

  • Variety
HBO Films is buying “Share,” a cautionary tale about internet culture that debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The movie came into the festival with theatrical distribution, but it will instead debut on the cable channel at some point in 2019.

It’s the second time this week that A24, the indie studio that backed the picture, is partnering with HBO. Earlier this week, A24 announced it was selling “Native Son,” another Sundance entry, to the cable giant. The deal for “Share” is said to be in the seven figures.

The film follows a teenage girl named Mandy who is the subject of a cellphone video that appears to show a sexual assault. Mandy was drunk when the apparent assault took place, and doesn’t remember what transpired. When the video is widely shared, she must navigate the escalating fallout.

“Share” is based on Pippa Bianco’s acclaimed short film of the same name,
