There is a revelation when Farlow returns from England with an alchemist in tow. Meanwhile, Maria turns to the Rutters for help when she is framed for a crime.
Secretary Farlow returns to the colony with an alchemist, who tries to convince the governor that lead can be transformed into gold thanks to some ingredients provided by the doctor and the Sharrows. The latter drive a hard bargain when providing the goods. The sheriff warns the people against the sin of buggery. Mrs Castrel makes an important confession to the doctor while dashing the hopes of the blacksmith still infatuated with her. Someone tries to frame Maria for theft. A letter from England brings bad news for the Sharrows.
Farlow returns from Bermuda with the effeminate Simeon Peck, who claims to be an alchemist though few believe he can turn metals into gold and Jocelyn discovers his relationship with Farlow, her main suspect for the spy. Peck's experiment apparently fails but its true nature shocks the settlers, ending things between Farlow and himself. Maria discovers that Massinger has tried to frame Pedro, and seeks help from the Rutters, leading to Massinger confessing his hatred of the Sharrows. However the Sharrows have their own trouble and blame Yeardley.
