According to director Tatsuya Nagamine, Akira Toriyama had written a screenplay that was 3 hours long, but the film only runs for 2 hours, so Nagamine and animation director Naohiro Shintani collaborated with Toriyama to analyze what can be kept in the film and what has to be dropped due to running time purposes.
However, there are some scenes that were animated but cut from the final theatrical film which will be added to the Blu-Ray and DVD release.
When Akira Toriyama began to write Dragon Ball Super (2015), he was reluctant about adding the character Broly to the franchise, instead he wrote a character named Kale, who is a Saiyan, as an homage to Broly. However one of the series producers in early 2017 convinced him to add Broly into the series, so he wrote a new story for Broly and drew a new design, so this version could be different from the original films.
Toei Animation knows the cultural impact the franchise has all over the world, so in order to avoid piracy, spoilers and fans worldwide can enjoy the film sooner, the studio delivered to several countries around the world the film with the animation still unfinished, this was so the Dubbing Studios on USA, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, etc, could start to work on the dub of the film so it can be released on the same date as in Japan.
Along with this film and Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, it could be said that the OVA Hey! Goku and his Friends Return. (2008) is canon to the series, since Tarbles, Vegeta's brother, is mentioned or appears in these three films.
The scouters in this film are more advanced and resistent to their predecessors, since these new models are more exact when calculating the Ki level of a person and when it reaches a level beyond its limit, it just stops instead of exploding.
The first time we see Freiza completely naked, in Dragon Ball Z, he was partially naked when he evolved into his First Transformation and originally Toriyama drew him naked for his resurrection in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F but in the end he dropped the idea.
This is the final animated film from 20th Century Fox as a standalone studio and distributor in North America. The next Dragon Ball movie will be co-distributed by 20th Century Fox Japan through Walt Disney Studios Japan.
For the Latin American dub, Lalo Garza, voice of Krillin in the series and director of the dub for this film, managed to make two retired voice actors to leave their retirement and reprice their respective roles, these actors were Roberto Sen as Paragus and Jose Luis Castañeda as Nappa, they both voiced those characters back in Dragon Ball Z.
Despite that "Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods"(2013) and "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F"(2015), were recorded with a Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos sound, it is unknown why this film has a Dolby Digital sound.
This film brings back some traditions and trademarks that the Dragon Ball original manga brought up but lost popularity or importance as the series progressed, some of them are: Sexual Innuendo Simple designs The tails and ape aspect of the Saiyans The Ozaru transformation Dumb wishes for the Dragon BallsAnd so on...
Some people expected that Broly, Gogeta and Bardock would appear on the film, when in early 2018, Toei Animation announced the re-release of the films Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku, Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan and Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, a few weeks later Toei confirma that Broly and Bardock would appear, while Gogeta was confirmed a few days before the film release in Japan.
In June 2019, Toei Animation announced a new film that would act as a sequel for "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" (2019), the Producers said that they were satisfied with the development of Broly on this film but that there were ideas and details that were dropped out from the movie that they'd like to use for the sequel.
Of the three new Dragon Ball canonical films, this one had more marketing (toys, posters of each character, TV spots released worldwide, radio announcements, sole conventions at Comic Cons, posters at Subways, Buses, etc.)
Toyotaro, who writes and draws the manga adaptation of Dragon Ball Super, has continued the story of the series writing a new Saga in the Manga that comes after Dragon Ball Super: Broly. In it, Goku makes passing reference to meeting "a new Sayian".
A controversy surfaced when it was shown that Goku's origin was changed from the one shown on Dragon Ball Z. However, it was later explained that the story told on Dragon Ball Z, despite that Toriyama liked it, it's not canon to what he wrote on the manga. In 2014 Toriyama wrote a mini manga titled "Dragon Ball Minus" which told the REAL origins of Goku, this manga is being taken as reference for Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
The character of "Kale" from the anime series was designed as an alternate universe Broly, sharing his demeanor and bezerker rage. They are the only two Super Sayians to exhibit green hair during their transformation. Kale features in a brief flashback cameo.
It is never explained, where Berryblue and Kikono were at the events of the Freeza's Arc in Dragon Ball Z and Resurrection F Arc in Dragon Ball Super, it can be assumed that since both aren't fighters and that in Dragon Ball Z Freeza's Army was big enough they might had been on another planet, while in Dragon Ball Super, Freeza was looking just for revenge he may not have considered appropriate to bring them aboard.
From the three original Broly films, the only characters that don't appear and fought against Broly or encountered him face to face are Gohan, A-18, Mr. Satan, Oolong, Master Roshi, Videl and Future Trunks.
This film is a continuation of the Dragon Ball Super Manga series, and not of the TV show, this explains why Vegeta never uses the SSJ Blue Evolved, since in the manga he achieves de SSJ God transformation instead.
Some fans had criticized the fact that Broly breaks the aggressive nature of a Saiyan and that he managed to fight Goku and Vegeta at their SSJ God phase. However let's remember that this FILM is a follow up of the MANGA nor the TV Series, in the Manga, Shen Long explains that occasionally there are Saiyans that defy the violent and malevolent nature of their race, Broly may had been one. Also that some Saiyans like Vegeta, Cabba, Caulifla and Kale lost that nature after losing their tails, and apparently that helps them to become more powerful, Broly loses his tail sometime off screen in the movie, and remember that Goku and some Saiyans managed to increase their powers after surviving deathly fights or just because they are Saiyans
