‘Turn Up Charlie’ Star Frankie Hervey on Building a Bond With Idris Elba
An entertainer taking a kid under his wing describes both the premise of “Turn Up Charlie” and the real-life relationship between actors Frankie Hervey and Idris Elba. Having no previous acting credits, Hervey was understandably nervous in taking on the gig. But under Elba’s tutelage, she gained confidence and inspiration to act more in the future. In the sixth episode, which takes place at a music festival, the duo’s relationship hits a major emotional inflection point.

Hervey: “It was my first job and it was completely nerve-wracking. I’ve done a lot of school plays. There were four rounds of auditions. They asked me how I was, and I said I was honestly quite freaked out. But when I met Idris,

How an Early Role in a French Film Shaped Idris Elba’s Career
Idris Elba has worn a lot of hats: actor, DJ, director — but it was the time he spent working a series of dull jobs that solidified his desire to pursue a career in the arts. Appearing in a string of roles on British television, he first saw his name appear in Variety on May 10, 1999, in a review of the French film “Belle maman,” starring Catherine Deneuve. The film expanded his acting chops, leading three years later to what he calls his most pivotal portrayal — as Stringer Bell in HBO’s “The Wire.” Since then, Elba has starred in some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, directed the feature film “Yardie” and co-created and starred in the Netflix comedy series “Turn Up Charlie.” He plays the villain in this summer’s “Fast & Furious” sequel “Hobbs and Shaw,” and continues for a fifth season in his Golden Globe-winning role as the titular

Idris Elba - what can't he do? The 46 year-old "Sexiest Man Alive" isn't just an actor, or the fan-favorite pick to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond. Elba joined the Indio music festival's star-studded lineup on Saturday night with a two-hour set in the Yuma tent, as his fiancée Sabrina Dowhre and his daughter Isan cheered him along onstage.

Elba's weekend performance might've been his Coachella debut, but it's far from the first time he's deejayed.
