Episode 2

Things are looking up for July. The slaves are free, many have left Amity plantation.

Robert Goodwin arrives in a white horse as the new plantation overseer promising the workers better condition and low rent for the houses. However keeping the workers motivated and preventing any further from leaving is a problem.

For July there is happiness. Goodwin has taken a liking for her but he is not going to marry a black woman even one that is a mulatto. Goodwin does marry Miss Caroline which is financially beneficial to him, he gets to control the land.

He shares his bed with July and they have a child together. Caroline finds herself in an unhappy triangle.

Dark clouds hover as the crops need picking and the workers refuse to work on Christmas day. Goodwin shows his nasty side.

This episode sees July altering her power relationship. There is a scene where she sees another lighter skin former slave doing well for herself through marriage. July certainly seems to manipulate Goodwin's feelings towards her.
