The Invaders: Storm (1967)
There at it again.
Storm is one of the better episodes. A small town in Florida has trouble as Hurricanes hit the Sun shine state out of season and miss the small town. What makes Storm so cool is the Invaders have a device which causes the storms. The device is hidden, there is fights, aliens vanish and turn red etc. Well and interesting episode which mixes faith again aliens. 7 stars.
A good plot twist.
Sci fi script at it's best. The Invader's are found out and before cell phones and social media the Aliens must wipe the town out. In the paper, a picture, witnesses Vincent has on big mess to clean up or else. Small town Wyoming is going get hit with a quake aka Invaders style. What works here is the twisted solution. There can not be a memory wipe, but instead a reenactment of the day with one part change so the repressed memories can be corrected. Valley of the Shadow is a change from the formulated feel of previous series. 7 stars.
It Chapter Two (2019)
It Chapter Two is lacking. Many cliche here for an audience here: Gay couple which gets beat up by town toughs. (there is always the town tough angle) The black family burned out years ago ( there is always a bad town secret) The old tribal ritual which will get rid of the creature. ( there is always some ancient ritual. How and why it works is never explained) Well It Chapter Two becomes a formulated movie, which turns into story about childhood PTSD, and bad dreams. Every past memory must have the chasing dream sequence. Yet another cliche, which turns into another C G I fest. We never find out what, why of the clown, and or the history behind it. The remake is different from the book and other movies. The end is like a therapy session of shrinking down bad feelings and memories. Nothing about the clown, and more about the characters growing up and past. The first movie was what the second was not. Maybe the joke about not knowing how to finish a story is a joke about the movie. Maybe the break between part one and two made the story lacking. Well 3 stars there is something just lacking.
The Invaders: Quantity: Unknown (1967)
Better than most
Quantity: Unknown has a device that survived a plane crash that the Invaders want it back. Well there is a plot twist as Dave makes a new friend. The Invaders has the usual Aliens in suits and thin ties. The usual ending where Dave has the evidence, but it vaporizes. Makes me wonder if The Invaders was influence by the cold war? The Invaders were the Soviets. Using cold war tactics of greed, fake accidents, bribes etc. 6 stars.
The Invaders: Doomsday Minus One (1967)
Lame but watchable.
Well the military base stuff is cool. We got a mystery with a nuclear test that will spell Doomsday for the earth. The story is good we find out the plot twist of why the general is helping destroy the earth. The effects, fights, and ending is very 1960's. Huge plot hole, of how the suicide mission general did not destroy the earth just by moving the anti matter bomb. Still okay 6 stars.
The Invaders: Nightmare (1967)
Them nasty bugs.
Them nasty bugs. Well Dave has another mystery too solve. This time the Invaders have another device which make bugs eat flesh and attack humans. Kansas has a locus problem. There is a women who the aliens try to drive crazy. A sheriff who is an Invader. The special effects are cool and the story is very 1960's. One of the better episodes. 6 stars.
The Invaders: The Leeches (1967)
Not a bad episode!
The Leeches episodes looks like the Nasty Invaders invented something that looks like an M R I machine, but not only does it looks at your brain, but sucks the information out of it. Well Dave to the rescue and Dave has a plan. The usual formulated Alien talk, and the bad Invaders devise a plan to counter it. Will Dave find his friend in time. The mix of 60's special effects and alien's in suits make for a 60's style tv series.
The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019)
Silly, but watchable!
Silly, but watchable! Angry Birds is silly and cute. My wife loved watching the Angry Birds Movie 2 because: The character are cute. The scenes, and animation is done in a silly, but cute way. Watching Birds 2 is like watch a silly video game level. Grabbing flaming balls, sling shots and bouncing around is much like a video game. I did not see the first one so there is a lost for the characters and there is some film gaps when I watched part 2. Watchable, but The Angry Birds Movie 2 is no Snow White or any other great animation classic. I miss the old animation drawing, but C G I is okay. There no classic story scene here and/or memorable Disney moment. But the kids will enjoy Angry Birds. 6 stars.
Surprise of the summer!
Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood was either going be awful or great. No in between for Tarantino's latest. Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood works for it is a buddy movie mixed in with Hollywood tales and experiences. Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood submerges the viewer into 1969 Hollywood, full of elitists, cults, clicks and the Hollywood crowd. The viewers learns about Rick Dalton's acting woes, syndication problems, and personal acting problems. A producers guides Dalton and we see the change in movie Westerns from 50's to Italian westerns to the more gritter Westerns of the late 60's. Dalton craps on in is a needy character for the Cliff Booth character. (aka Dalton's personal stunt double) What we learn from the relationship from the stuntman's perspective that Booth finds the crap in Hollywood is par for him. First the viewer feels bad about the relationship until we find out that Dalton goes to bat for the black listed stuntman. Cliff faults balance out Dalton's fault as the film unfolds. Cliff is a Alpha male tough guy with no fear Navy Seal personality, who gets into many a tall tale. Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood gives threw the movie experience a feel for Hollywood and what goes on in the industry, back in the day. Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood gives the middle finger to P C Hollywood with it's 60's counterculture vibe with a surprise ending of what if the Manson family and it's countercultureism home invaded the wrong place. Well all I can say is the flame thrower is classic. Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood is on the edge, pushes the envelope for a anti Hollywood film. This fresh piece of film is the surprise of the summer.
Scary film in format only
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a scary film, but a scary film in format only. Not a bad movie which is more geared for kids and Scary Stories is sort of like the It movie. There is the ground work for a small town with teenage characters from 1969 who are bullies, out casts and a stranger from a strange land several states over with a mystery to tell. What works for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is the character development which unfolds along with the vengeful spirit story. A old concept, but done in a way which keeps the audience interested. The scares are lame, but the of the late 60's events and what happen in the towns past makes for a good background story which puts the audiences into the story. The back of Scary Stories creates a big build up, but a bit of a let down for a scary ending. But the movie is still entertaining tho. 6 stars.
Of Unknown Origin (1983)
Creeps up on you like a rat!
Of Unknown Origin creeps up on you like a rat! As the sup said "you think about the rat 20 percent of the time the rat thinks 100 percent of the time about you" The mention line sums up the battles of wits of rats and men. Starts out in the Yuppie 80's of the young white male urban profession Weller who has it all. The investment job, blond trophy wife, kid, and a lovely Brownstone house. The director creates the cold steel look and actions of the 80's corporate world. Weller has a huge down sizing project to make or break for the Yuppie who is on the move up, but there is rat throwing into the perfect life. Instead of the usual horror movie of mystery Of Unknown Origin has the viewer knowing what the problem is! The perfect house and the disruptions of the rat has the viewer wondering what will happen next. The rat is probing at first and getting more destructive making the house the rat's own. In the middle part Of Unknown Origin we learn much about the history of the rat from Weller's research. Of Unknown Origin has a epic primal battle between rat and man, which represent a battle threw out the ages of our survival vs the adaptable rat. 7 stars.
The Lion King (2019)
Not bad! The Lion King had a good story and pace. The Lion King had family deception, character development mixed in with a story about life. There was some P C headlines (attention grabbing stuff) about racism etc but the movie was tame. I guess the vegan, nature crowd would disagree the nature story about natures order and the food chain. My grand dad who was a game warded would find the story a good education about nature for the kids. Especially the over use part. The story about a boy Lion growing up and finding out the he will become the lion king is a good retelling of home away from home finding home again story. I miss the old school cartoons, but the C G I was okay. The beautiful C G I created great Disney magic. The father son segment was magic. The action ending of good vs evil would be exciting for any kid. 7 stars.
Miami Vice: Theresa (1987)
A different take which pays off.
Therea is a different take for a Miami Vice episode. The usual car chases, deep cover etc is shifted into a drama about personalities and the weight of drug addiction. Crockett is on a big drug case, and the dealers are looking for a weakness in Crockett's machine. The second story is about Crockett's personal life as Crockett is in love and ask Theresa is marry him. The sub-stories collide because Theresa is addicted to drugs after a medical problem. The drug dealers blackmail Theresa to get information from Crockett! The story of a high functioning doctor who can hide her addiction is a sub-story of how assumptions can blind side people and the damage of drugs into the characters' personal lives. A gut wrenching personal Vice episode. A mix of an action show/soap opera which plays out well. A real life feel of one of season three better episodes. 7 stars.
Miami Vice: El Viejo (1986)
Miami Vice meets a Western.
Miami Vice meets a Western. I usually found El Viejo a cheesy episode. After watching El Viejo again El Viejo has an enduring quality. Formulated, and predictable with the usual Miami Vice cliches such as; information at the right time/place, Crockett tells a personal story, shoot out at the ending etc, which happens every week uh again. Well, I did not mind the predictability of El Viejo, because Willy Nelson has an enduring quality. The hard edge Texas Ranger, lawman not a baseball player, makes a El Viejo sentimental. There is a humor and enduring quality which Nelson makes for the Texas lawman character. Of course Crockett a bit of a cowboy himself fits right into the story. Just got to love this episode. I am feeling generous and give the old cowboy 7 stars.
ABC Afterschool Specials (1972)
Some are sad others are great.
ABC Afterschool Specials well Some are sad others are great. Some I could not relate with. Watching people do stupid things was hard to watch. But hey others where great. The Scott Baio drunk driving episode with the sad injury at the end with Scott diving high school match was memorable. The episode with the spoiled kid in the inner city lock up who gets stabbed over a chair episode shows how high school stupidly can cause normal life to a tragic at light speed was burned into my mind The most memorable episode was the high schooler who starting to hang out with the wrong crowd. A good kid who started with making a friend who hung out with the wrong crowed the first bad choice. Not a big problem but then starts which got the teenager into drinking, and then drugs; Another bad choice! Then stealing his dad's whiskey bottle to fit in, just getting gradually worse life choices. The teenager could of stopped here, and listen to his dad and caring family and just be a bad spot in the boys life. Regrettable, the teenager rebuked his fathers advice and caved into peer pressure! The drugs cause and effect for need of cash created a moment where the hard core friend asked if the teenager was cool meaning is he up for bad things and the guy said yeah and I just yelled to the kid on T V don't do it. The choice was his to walk away. In the end, a robbery did not work out, and the Teenager yelled dad help me behind bars as the Father says sorry it's out of my hands. These episode hit me hard. My dad watched a few of these episodes and this is true to real life. Strong words for a man who seen tons of insurance claims. Afterschool Specials always interests the young viewe, with a story which is interesting, and related to the viewers young life.. Probably good lessons on making right choices. 6 stars.
Funny as a kid, but did not age well!
Funny as a kid, but did not age well! I loved watching Newhart a few times as a kid, but watched it a few time later on and like most sit coms does not age well. Funny in spots. There is a few memorable episode but hey Newhart hits the formulated set up comic sit com line up. See the jokes before you should. The plot twist is seen before it happens. But Newhart had some funny roles, and joke. A few memorable episode had to do something and would not leave Bob alone was hilarious . Usually the 3 brothers add to the humor in any episode they where in. 5 stars.
All the makings of a good horror movie.
All the makings of a good horror movie. Unlike many modern horror movies, Crawl has no P C or strong social messages which dilutes the story development. Crawl has real life characters which are ugly, flawed and believable. All great horror movies need and have great character development where the audience feels the pathos for the characters. The daughter/father stressed relationship with a stressed family gives a real feel for Crawl. The viewer does not even like the characters at first, but slowly develops empathy for the father/daughter relationship. A slow start story with a hardship of competitive swimming. Crawl has a strained family relationship of phone conversations which drives the stressed daughter into finding her dad. A hard edged story which gristly make the viewer wanting more; as the story rolling onto a hurricane and town full of gators. The directing, acting and gator effects creates a story of struggle with the elements. A story of survival. It is a story that could actually happen which makes it even more believable. Best summer movie so far. 9 stars.
The Beachcombers (1972)
Lame Lame Lame
Lame Lame Lame! The usual lame C B C drama. No one watched The Beachcombers growing up in Canada. In fact The Beachcombers was the brunt of many jokes about the C B C. The only thing I watch on C B C is the sports! What am I going watch The Beachcombers! insert laughter after the comment. Well there was a few interesting episodes. Like the huge log which can not be moved, the model air plane one, but as one can tell the stories were on the lame side. The Nyck vs the Relic feud was cool. Well compared to the high budget police shows of the 70's and slick big acting, and sets of the 80's shows like Miami Vice I would change the dial on the T V back then! Yes we actually had a dial back the. Well The Beachcombers lack on budget, and sets hurt the show. Well it was a family show, but I still liked Disney as a kid. I give The Beachcombers 3 stars.
The Rifleman (1958)
Watch a few shows on re runs not that bad.
Watched a few shows on re runs not that bad for an older show. Here is what's good about The Rifleman: The beginning is just awesome with a Rambo style Rifleman. Solid acting Connors and the rest of the gang are believable; there is none of that wooden acting some older shows have. The story fit well into the 45 minute format. Intro character development, a problem, and the dramatic solution jives well. The show introduces fairness, family, and some Rifleman action for a good Western . For a black and white show there is little of the usual cheesy wooden acting, sets, and choppy directing etc. Compared to today's formulated t v, The Rifleman actually stands out as a better show. Surprisingly there is a brilliance in simplicity over the over social message, and over dramatic scripts of today shows. Just pure entertainment gold. 7 stars.
I hate musicals.
Grease is more of a musical and I hate musicals. Well the movie is like a stage play. I bet it was a stage play. There is a love story from the lake. High school drama of clicks. With songs in the middles end etc mixed into a romance. Sort of a 50's Happy Days feel. Acting, and directing is okay, but not my cup of tea. A classic if you like musicals because Olivia was a great singer, and John is great actor.
Neither bad nor good!
Gotti well one could say forget about it! With Gotti some of the acting was sloppy. Parts of the story lagged. The back and forth in time sequences at times was done in a way which hurt the movies story. There were some interesting parts in Gotti which followed real life. Gotti character went back an forth from being believable to rambling, which made each scene either good or bad. I will not call the Gotti movie a classic and or awful but just it is what it is a I bought it at Wall-mart for 10 dollars. Back in the day, when Blockbuster was around Gotti would have been in the 99 cent been real quick. Well I will not trash it. Just with John T involved people got there expectation a little to high. 6 stars.
My Favorite Martian (1963)
Another re run after school special!
Back in the 80's My Favorite Martian was another re run after school special! What worked for My Favorite Martian was: Good formulated outer space humor; Bill would get into trouble because of: A one of the Martian's devices would malfunction. B there is a trouble because someone walks into when of the Martians experiments etc. C The Martian would be found out or has to correct a un-for-seen problem. Great characters: Bill stumbling around trying to figure out the Martian problems. Mrs Brown is not the sharpest knife in the drawer gets into humorist predicament, and is the brunt of lots of the jokes. The Martin is silly, but sharp. Memorable episode are: Bill climbing the rocks with the Martins broken device with the stranded child. The time Mrs Brown became the worlds best jewel thief because of the Martin device and a book. The collection of cells from the detective. My Favorite Martian aged well for a good cheesy way. 7 stars
Moving em on out! Moving moving keep those!
Great begging with the move them on out Rolling rolling rolling keep those doggies rolling Rawhide then the whip sound. Some times I would just watch the beginning. Well Client Eastwood was big back in the 80's so I and the rest of North Dakota and Winnipeg area would watch Rawhide. Well sometime I would watch Rawhide. Yates was the Eastwood character and the rest of the cast would be on an adventure each dusty trail. There were episodes of towns people believing someone was a witch, a women in distress, Natives on the trail, one of the crew is falsely accused of a crime etc. Pretty standard stuff, but sometime I would watch the whole show. Hey the Rockford file was taken of so I channel surfed. In Black and White, but the acting stayed strong and the pace was good for an hour show. Watched a couple episode with my dad, which brought back memories. Well decent for a Western. 7 stars.
Project U.F.O. (1978)
Great show for an 8 year old.
Well Project U.F.O. was part of the 70's U F O craze, and I was all in. Had U F O mag etc. Project U.F.O. was a great show for the 8 year old I was. Well I caught a few episodes on cable and all I can say is the show is just another formulated cop show. There was the human eliminate of the people involved. Special effects added to the action are dated. The straight police investigation, of questions, checking out the sight, and lab results just like C S I. Some cases were frauds, other made one wonder, and other had a surprise ending. The episodes I remember are: the U F O robots that put out the fire, and the homeless guys who threw a bottle in on the scene and gave the investigators a wrong conclusion. The episode where the parrot makes the U F O noise at the ending after the investigation was done and no one knew the episode was true was cute. Well I give Project U.F.O. a six out of ten. Interesting, sort of a kid's show, but not really. 6 stars.
The Brady Bunch (1969)
A memorable family sit com.
A memorable family sit com. Two merged families with 6 kids makes for situational comedy. The Brady Bunch is lame by today's standards, because the Brady Bunch was copied and copied every bit and was redone over and over again. Just add different area of country, race, social class and time frame, but the story stays the same. Memorable episodes are Peter with the budgie, the vase, the trip out West etc. Well dated , cheesy for today series, but had the charming push of American family values and doing the right things. Dated for today's crowd! Not for the H B O crowd. 6 out of 10 stars.
