Snuff 102 (2007)
2/10
Tries to shock but only bores
29 March 2020
My quick rating - 2,4/10. Ok, first an explanation. These are NOT horror movies. This is its own category, Shocksploitation. The whole point of these movies is to look so poor quality, and shocking you question it being real. If you think this is new, it is not. Guinea Pig started this 40 years ago with underground torture movies that got government attention when they thought it was real. And yes, they graduated to fake snuff. This movie mixes the grainy, fake torture but tries to incorporate a plot of a man being interviewed about the existence of "snuff" movies, all the while the viewer is bearing witness to it supposedly happening in what we assume the man is a part of. The interviewer preps for this by searching the web and finding some well known BS snuff that you may have seen before and the ever popular "beheading" video that was from a terrorist executing "someone." Blah Blah, so they showed something real, but one big rule of these movies, if you are trying to fool people into believing this nonsense, first off, don't tell them at the beginning "all the torture and violence in this film is real" Immediately you know it isn't. Second, what guinea pig did right was shoot in single camera long straight cuts. Made it far more difficult to tell it was fake. These movie has camera angles shifting and moving all the time. Who has time for editing film while torturing someone they kidnapped, am I right? LOL. The atypical camera angles hiding the most depraved scenes forcing you to figure them out or imagine it is also used. My point is, don't let crap such as this make you believe This is not horror, this is a filmed stunt to fool and shock you. I watch this because I am interested in the lengths people go to achieve this but in reality, it is just plain boring. This actually tried so it wasn't as bad as Guinea Pig was. That was a straight 1.5 hours of fake torture, no slim plot. And since American Guinea Pig has come and shifted into making plot driven gorefests now, and August Underground has been shocking in the USA for a while as well, this falls into just another attempt. It fails. Not a single part grossed me out, it has all been done before, and I have seen far WORSE. I give the little points it got on merit of some of the dialogue as it was an educated opinion about snuff at times. Do I think snuff films exist? YES, people are inherently evil and to think none of the sickos haven't filmed their murders before would be hard to believe. I am sure they have, but is their an underground market for it? Hard to say, if there is, I don't care to see it. I get nothing out of watching women get slapped around, and raped with various objects (which is always up to you to figure out since they make sure it is dark or camera is just off enough so you can't see, luckily). Long winded but lots to say on the subject. Long story short, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, AVOID UNLESS YOU REALLY WANT TO SEE IT.

Not BBBBAAAAHHHHHDDD
27 March 2020
My quick rating 5,4/10. Nice to see NZ filmmakers paying homage to the great Peter Jackson, that is for sure. We seem to have mutated everything else and turned things into bloodthirsty killers so why not try doing the same with SHEEP lol. Yes, the jokes you are thinking are ever present as well. And abundant. It falls flat on the horror side though, as the goofy gore that these movies are known for is lacking. But the sheer silliness is pretty funny. I would've liked to see a bit more of a couple of the lesser used characters since one of them was quite amusing. Overall it is surely a good effort and did lead me to checking out what else this team has made. I unfortunately did not see much at all (scifi called "Realiti" to check out). Not BBBBAAAAHHHHHDDD. Sorry, I had to.

A rising trend being Cecila Fay..get her a good script, pls
6 January 2020
My quick rating - 3,9/10. For a really hockey b-budget flick, this one does have its moments. Mainly Azura (Cecilia Fay) who does have some pretty good martial arts skills it seems. The fight scenes do tend to show off her talent, unfortunately the story itself, or the acting doesn't lend to much more. Instead this movie turns into a woman being taken prisoner in a post-apocalyptic future world by the evil, and horribly acted....well, he doesn't have a name. There imprisoned, she must fight to the death for a bunch of rich types in an arena, which resembles the warehouse where one of the film makers must work to earn his daily pay. Still, a very valiant attempt using some creative special effects that were 80s quality. Kudos for the effort, just take Fay, and give her a real script and you might have something.

Good female fighters...and that is it.
6 January 2020
My quick rating - 3,8/10. The women that fought in this movie were actually quite good, especially Cecily Fay, but beyond that, it wasn't a movie. They attempted to piece together a plot but to no avail. It was more of a showcase of what I can only assume was a group of people, mostly women, that trained at a martial arts dojo of some skill and decided to make a movie. If there was a tiny budget, and some written story, the actresses (i do not mention actors, the men in this were horrid) could have pulled it off. Remember her name though, she should get some work at some point for a good look with well rounded fighting skills.

Didn't a superior movie have this idea and been made in the late 90s?
5 January 2020
I am sorry for chiming in on a movie I have not seen yet, but judging by the synopsis, trailer and all these reviews, this movie rips off "Strange Days" with the exact same premise, yet is surrounded by a far better story, film maker, etc. I will not say that this movie is good or bad, nor review it since as I stated I have not seen it, and am not some BS factory judging movies without viewing them. I just needed to point this out after reading up and since I haven't decided if I am going to bother watching, I did not want my initial thoughts lost. If I do get around to watching this, which seems to be a big gamble between all the massive "slam" reviews, and all the obvious "biased" reviews together, it is hard to get a gauge of how this movie actually might be, instead of an all out WIN or MISS. Only spoiler is I haven't seen it LOL. Rating a 5 since it is in the middle and I can't submit without a number. I'll return if I do watch this and adjust accordingly

The good: Action. The bad: Editing. Ok, that makes it easy for you
14 December 2019
My quick rating - 6,9/10. The good: Action. The bad: Editing. Ok, that makes it easy for you. Now if you are reading on IMDB, ignore any review stating a 1 or 2. That is simply haters of Reynolds or Bay in general. I can understand your dislike, but take off the blinders. This movie is just as much a 1 as it is a 10. Both are moronic ratings and can be disregarded. In reality this movie is exactly what you expect, wall to wall action. The opening car chase is excessively long, and highly entertaining. All of that just to lead you into the movie. For those who just want the action and no story, this movie isn't overly complex, just the method of storytelling will lose you if you aren't paying attention (hence the one ratings by the children on here). Reynolds is the main star, and delivers the usual deadpan one liners throughout, half of which don't seem to hit the mark quite as well as he normally does, but the material wasn't quite as spot on as "Deadpool" so can't blame him for it. Almost seems crazy that a movie of this magnitude and budget heads directly to netflix. I have to say this would've looked great on an IMAX screen. Thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and if you don't understand the quick editing technique, you apparently aren't aware Michael Bay started out making music videos and that is just the way they are shot. Using it in high action scenes is just a style, take it or leave it, but please leave the reviewing for people who have brains and don't allow bias to oversway logic. As I stated before seeing this, grab the popcorn, check reality at the door, kick back with a beer and enjoy 2 hours of nearly non-stop action.

A very well made yet tedious journey from Tarantino
1 December 2019
My quick rating - 6,9/10. Well, this is a nice little niche movie from Tarantino. If you aren't familiar at all with the Manson murders, then a bunch of this movie will make little or no sense. That won't make the movie bad by any means. I believe some pretty good performances were turned in by all, for the most part. Although zombie Margot Robbie was a little distracting as Sharon Tate. Anyway, the movie follows the lives of a few Hollywood B listers in late 60s Hollywood, and the intertwining of their lives with the events of the Manson murders. That is a very blanket statement way of covering this, as a few Quentin inside jokes are slipped in along the way, most likely a lot more than I noticed on one viewing. Big nod to Bruce Lee though. I think Tarantino used his clout to try and make a movie to show off a bit of his friendships he has made and the knowledge he has about movies in general, to a good extent for the movie, but also about the only drawback to it. The length of this movie got tedious when it wasn't needed. Put that aside, and the movie wraps itself up, two hours and 40 minutes later, with a not so satisfying ending. It was just far enough off to make it more fiction. Maybe that was done for the sake of it being a movie more than a documentary, I really couldn't tell what they were shooting for at that point. But again, this is not a knock on the film, the movie has typical Tarantino blood abound, when need be, good one liners and fitting humor. Everyone is expecting Pulp Fiction all over again, even I will admit I often think about when he might capture that brilliance again. That is my fault for thinking that way, though. I doubt I am alone when doing that.

A micro look at one of many stories on 9/11 (avoid the fake 1/10 reviews)
9 November 2019
My quick rating - 5,5/10. Well, we know the outcome. Tragic, and this movie just focuses on 5 people stranded in one elevator during the event. It was not spectacularly done, but it sure was not poor. The casting is questionable, which I believe was on purpose. Give the more everyday look, so to speak. Whoopi isn't your everyday star type, and Sheen, well, he is not some glam name, and his repuatation works well too be trapped in an elevator shaft. Sinec I am purposely writing this for IMDB at ATM, the reviews here are at 49 (4.1). This board is a GREAT diagram for all IMDB viewers to take note of all the people that gave a 1/10, and claiming how awful it was. These are the people you know 100 percent never to listen to, since they are taking personal bias, and jumping the easy bandwagon of trashing the film on merits it actually has. I am not claiming to be the authority, but I sure don't follow the herd like the sheep that are littering this post. The movie is much better than a 1, and for surely not a 10. Nor am I going to click 10 just to make it jump up either. I assure you after you watch this, you will agree with me, give or take a point up or down.

Where has this movie been hiding?
1 November 2019
My quick rating 7,5/10. How in the world did this movie sit unwatched by myself for this long? This is an instant classic for Halloween viewing for sure. The flick is an anthology movie of sorts. Each story flows within the context of the whole movie, which is all tied together throughout in such a masterful way, it is near genius. Every bit of scary stories any child in the USA has grown up hearing is reflected in the shorts of this, be it razor blades in candy, or the bus of kids off the cliff, werewolves, vampires, anything that goes bump in the night is all fair game in this film. Michael Dougherty helms the whole shabang and does an incredible job. Each story in its isolation is instantly tied into the story as a whole in a unique way. Much to be said for the editing and continuity department on keeping this all inline. Wonderful shots of decorated homes, great casting including the ever talented Anna Paquin and all the kids really. So much great stuff to be had in this flick. If you haven't seen it, make this top priority on your list for the next All Hallows Eve, as this movie isn't just around the Halloween holiday, but embodies everything Halloween, the day/night is. If this wasn't just an everyday review, I would get into how this movie could be the single best Halloween film ever made just because it is Halloween, whereas the movie "Halloween" could be any other day of the year, and still be a masterpiece. "Trick 'r Treat is Halloween all the way through.

Oldman deserves better
15 October 2019
My quick rating - 4,8/10. Started off looking promising, but the execution left a lot to be desired. Oldman as the new ship owner that takes on "Mary" (an abandoned sailing ship) plays his role extremely subdued, almost like he was bored. Well, so was I. The movie just goes through the motions of a ghost taking over those aboard the ship in an non-frightening manner. All of these events lead up to a massive letdown of an ending. So not the makes of a movie I would recommend, even for huge fans of Gary Oldman, as I am.

Not horrible, just not that good
15 October 2019
My quick rating - 3,9/10. Don't mind the 1/10 ratings on IMDB, it surely is not that bad however it isn't all that good either. This movie is just a story about one woman stuck in a haunted house for one night. Straight and to the point. Couple jump scares here and there, and a very slow burn to a twist ending that really doesn't surprise anyone. A decent attempt on a shoestring budget with a solid performance but she just doesn't have much to work with. I'd pass up on this one.

Good gore, poor plot stuck within a good idea
7 October 2019
My quick rating - 4,9/10. Have you ever wondered how the news is going to report some supernatural, witch like massacre that occurs at a cabin in the woods (as always)? Well, this movie tries to give you just that, the way the media would report it, and how it actually happened. Pretty clever idea as this movie runs with the supernatural reality happening, while on the tv is a "true crimes" type show showing the case at the same time. The only real problem is with a nice idea like this, you really should craft a good story to do this with. The story itself just wasn't captivating enough to make the novel approach to telling it worth it. They did do a good job with the gore to keep you entertained though. Definitely sits on the "so close" bar of what could've been a really good flick. If you want to see a decent family gets slaughtered for no apparent reason movie, and don't mind the plot really not being explained in the slightest (the real plot, not the tv show plot) than you'll be fine with this one. Kept my attention after it got rolling, I just kept hoping for a bit more.

Funny but so many issues
25 March 2019
My quick rating - 5,6/10. Ok I have a lot of problems with this movie. First off, why wasn't it Paige in it? Second, if you use actors instead, why was the Rock in it. Now the story is about her life, and yes, she was raised in a wrestling family. This shows her road actually into her fame and her downfall. But it never really pulled you in unless you really understand how that world worked. It needed to explain far better what she had to go through. Her opponents in the movie were also bogus so that did not help. I can't say anything about her brother, would be spoiler, but the focus on that also was distracting. It does have some very nice performances by those in the movie. I would say if you are a fan of hers, or even WWE you will get something out of it, but if you care less about sports entertainment, you'll get nothing.

17 March 2019
My quick rating 7,8/10. This movie was so much fun to watch. Have to get drunk to survive? Totally new one. Every actor in this played their parts to a tee. And sprinkle in a little romance as well. I have no idea how I had never heard of this one until now but what a great find. The effects as well were good. Such a well crafted flick for sure. Don't miss it if you haven't seen it.

What did I just watch? not in a good way
13 December 2018
My quick rating - 1,4/10. Oh my, what did I just watch. I know this movie was trying really hard to be funny, seem like a grindhouse, clone "Lethal Weapon" and a bunch of other things but none of them happened. The camera work leaves you dizzy, first problem. The actors are absolutely horrible. I seriously think the writers gave a crayon to a 5 year old and had him/her write the plot, and then made it adult adding swear words. The editing was about as crisp as when I used to have to repair VHS tapes that had snapped when I worked at a video store and spliced the tape back together. Just scene/scene. WOW. The special effects were special all right, and not in the uplifting type way, more the way that you really can't believe these are effects at all. My brain hurts just trying to realize all the flaws in this movie without subjecting myself to think about it. I get what they wanted to do, but if you are going to be purposely bad, at least do it with ANY sense of humor.

Mundane use of Central Park
13 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
My quick rating - 4,1/10. The historic Central ParK serves as the backdrop for a basically non-existent story of a group of teens partying in said park. But there is a killer on the loose. Of course there is, since at the beginning we hear about some ponzi scheme and one of the kids fathers happens to be the mastermind. Does this have anything to do with the killer? So past the twist, or not, up to you, this is just you average slasher with no quality kills, no real tension since the teens act like complete fools. I don't really know how anyone can say this is gritty. Aside from the initial shot, you would be hard pressed to even know if this is in Central Park at all. Very forgettable slasher that you would probably be just fine with missing. Oh, and the acting...well, there isn't any unless you include bad acting that is.

One Less God (2017)

Not a bad film that is just off enough to not be really good
29 September 2018
My quick rating - 5,6/10. Although the movie is somehwat pretentious and tries very hard to push an agenda of religion, politics...probably more than just that really, it still is somewhat effective. The characters are fairly unique to one another which helps in the diversity, and the situation of being under siege with people that are not all similar. This is also very imoprtant to the cultural aspect of this movie. Unfortunately the acting is really hit or miss. The same characters that do a fine job in one scene, will be downright asleep in another. The uneveness gets a bit distracting. Now classifying this movie as action is slightly a stretch, but I couldn't really peg it elsewhere. To judge on the action, you'll be disappointed since this isn't a "black Hawk Down" or "Bengazi" type flick. This is much more focused on the interactions of the players, and how they gel in a no win situation. If it wasn't for the flaws I mentioned, and those I am about to, such as weird camera work that seems out of place, and scenes that really could've been left on the cutting room floor to get this under 2 hours. One last gripe, which I think supports my first statement completely: Changing the name of the film from "One Less God" to "Mumbai Siege" for the release. To me that sounds like a major copout to attract attention to it being an all out action fest, when in reality, that is far from what this is. Too many flaws to reach much higher than a six, but it leaves with a quote that I personally think was brilliant. "If our children keep dying for the sake of our beliefs, isn't it time our beliefs started dying for the sake of our children? "

No one in control, so movie type changes constantly
13 September 2018
My quick rating 2,6/10. This is what happens when you really don't know what type of movie you want to make. The story, I suppose, is about a secret experiment developed in a bio chemical company, aptly named biochem. Of course there are ulterior motives, and not to spoil it, the plan is to wipe out humanity. That is kind of told in the beginning anyway. So the movie, horrible acting, and I mean horrible. So the idea is in place, but as you watch, you can see the director just saying, ok, wait, how about a zombie movie...so now it is a zombie movie, but then a little while later, the director passes over the bong after a few hits, and decides there has to be aliens. So now it is sci fi as well, but why not throw in some ridiculous blood splatter...don't have the money? Just use adobe premiere and throw fake blood around. No one will notice how stupid it looks. The laundry list of problems with this movie can go on and on. A faster review-don't waste your time.

Very well done trip into the brink of insanity
24 August 2018
My quick rating - 6,9/10. Certain stories are just not going to work if you can't believe the acting. This would be one of them. I also have to say, at times our lead (Carla Gugino) loses focus, meaning she doesn't come off as believable. While this is a minor gripe, the only real thing that threatens this movie from being great is a seemingly rushed ending. The story centers around a sex game gone wrong, you know, where you handcuff your wife to the bed, in hopes of rekindling that old passion in your marriage, only to be the guy that has a heart attack and dies on your wife. That isn't a spoiler, it is the point of the movie. She must figure out how to get out, or survive being shackled to the bed. To say she doesn't lose her mind is an understatement, and it happens really fast. A bit too fast, but I suppose I can live with that. In her travels through insanity she must confront her own dark secrets from her past and ultimately chose what to do with them, leave them tucked away or confront them. The movie itself is far more psychological thriller than horror and does quite well, albeit rushed, in demonstrating the way she processes the whole situation, in reality, and within her mind. I will not give any spoilers to what thrown in part of the end bothered me so much. I'll leave that part for you. Overall this is a good flick that may have been great with just a little more TLC. As usual, Stephen King comes up with some great material (if you haven't noticed, his stories are being done all over the place, as I am weekly glued to Castle Rock for one example) and although I haven't read this story (which is good so I can't make a comparison) I am sure readers will still appreciate this movie along with non King readers as well.

Horror this good is few and far between
24 August 2018
My quick rating - 7,7/10. Horror tends to not be this good. So when gems like this rise up, you need to quickly get your eyes trained on them. The elements that make this so good are interwoven through a story of a disturbing family secret that seems to be more than just an accident in the family. In a good horror flick, you need to have some mystery along with the scares to keep you interested in just why it is happening. Or just go all out with gore and show boobs. Well, as each style has their own place and audience, the more true viewer tends to like a good story along with the scares, and if their needs to be blood, then make it memorable without being gratuitous. The balance here is kept fully in check, and as each bit of info this family finds, or opens if you will, the more drawn in they (and you) become. The acting in this movie is really quite good, with each character dealing with the things around them in a very realistic way. One wants to dive head first into the spirit world, while others are terrified of it. And all are effected differently due to this. An excellent entry into any horror collection, and really is a two watch flick to pick up on everything, well, not really, just the end will make you want to go back and pick up some pieces that were stuck in there. A must see for true horror fans that want to just peel away from the torture porn for a bit (and you know I am a fan of that, but we all need some balance to our movie viewing).

Exceptional flick
31 July 2018
My quick rating - 8,8/10. WOW. It has been a long time since I have seen a movie that hits on all cylinders like this. Each aspect, be it drama, action, sci-fi, mystery, basically you name it minus horror gets touched upon and brilliantly. I can't say anything about the acting since it most likely is fine, but reading it takes away from that. I don't judge acting when I don't understand the actors and can't trust the subtitles to be accurate. The movie is about a virtual reality online game champion, and team leader (i say that since it has to do with the movie) who gets framed for a murder. To the extents of the frame job would be criminal for me to describe, you just have to see it. Basically he is imprisoned for this, and while there, he insists his innocence and befriends a serial killer to get some advice on how to get out. Well, the movie would be ok with it being just about that, but he does of course need to prove his innocence, so once out he hooks up with his online team to do just that. Now my description is vague, at best, for a good reason. To give up anything more would not do justice to how well this movie works. The visuals are fantastic, each scene either perfectly believable in the real world, or completely out there on a tech level, or even a bit beautiful in a fantasy world. The action scenes are top notch, and as with most movies from the orient, this being Korean, the scenes are long and very detailed. Do yourself a favor and check this movie out, one of the few times I hope Hollywood gets their hands on this and can even close to touch the quality of this with some American actors. I don't need to pick anyone out, just I could see this being a phenom in the right hands (easier to follow for us who only speak English). Then again, it already was.

A-listers : Check. Lets prove we can still make garbage
11 July 2018
My quick rating - 3,4/10. How do you take a group of A-list actors/actresses and make a really crappy movie? Well, ask James Franco, he has done it, and with ease. The horribly directed work of his is only the beginning of the flaws in this movie. It was almost like the gang got together, got high, while watching Cherry 2000, and said "we can do much better than that". Trick is, they meant much better and being worse. Where a movie like Mad Max and Cherry 2000 excel is exactly where this movie falls to pieces. The cinematography was c-grade level and the score was just plain awful. Trying to be epic during a pathetic looking motorcycle chase is just one example. The wasted talent surrounding this movie is astounding. Jokovich who isn't known for her acting, has proven she can act well, and I really have to say this is the worst I have seen her perform. Then again, I believe the script may have a lot to do with it, how else can you explain having Snoop Dog in it, and not utilize his sense of humor in the slightest? And since this is Francos baby, I will point out I am a fan of his, and even so, I have to say unless you are dead set on having his children, you will be just fine missing this mess and watch anything else of his to tide you over.

Mad Genius (2017)

Use caution on other reviews, Bad movie.
7 July 2018
My quick rating - 3,4/10. I have to save people from reading obvious "fake" reviews on IMDB. This movie attempts to try and fool you, and if you don't think for a minute in this movie, you will be fooled. Into being entertained that is. In an attempt to be weird, just for the sake of being weird, the movie is a complete mess. Unfortunately the plot itself doesn't lend a hand to the sub par actors and give them something to work with. Without giving anything away, a guy wants to "hack" (using that term very loosely) the human mind to save the world. In doing so, with the electronics you most likely dropped off last time you recycled electronics, he finds himself and his best friend (oh, big plot point, does he exist?) trying to solve this plan, again, hacking your mind. Now since this movie doesn't rely on any theory, science, computer knowledge, etc. you just have to assume he is doing something. But of course, the bad guy (no plural, budget couldn't afford that) wants to stop him. Then again, is there a bad guy. If you are going to make a movie that relies on wondering these things, please write in some part of it to explain. It isn't that this movie is confusing, it is just so poorly done and trying to rip off by far better versions of the "all in your mind" idea, that this just falls so flat. I am unsure the makers of this movie were even sure which way they were going with this. Do yourself a favor, and don't bother with this one, you'll end up just being "Mad" P.S. If you worked on this movie, good for you, but don't jump on here and write BS reviews praising this as the new coming of Fight Club, etc. It makes you look dumb, and not everyone can see through the nonsense reviews so quickly. I knew it was coming after the first 10/10, but after seeing a few back to back, I figured the crew sat in the same room and passed the laptop around in a circle to get them done.

Great movie, didn't read book, reviewed as a movie
20 June 2018
My quick rating - 8,1/10. I will make this clear. I did NOT read the book. This is watched and reviewed with that aside and do yourself a favor, don't read the IMDB reviews because all you will get is "the book, blah blah blah" and zero stars. In other words, people who don't understand how to rate a movie. This flick is a visual beast, I cannot stress the sheer amount of detail that is conveyed through this movie. It is almost astounding that the CGI has come to such levels as this, to blend in and out of the real world seamlessly. Of course, through action scene after scene you know it is all animated, but you won't think a lick of that as you just watch in awe. Granted, a $100+ computer generated demo wouldn't be worth your 2.5 hours, but if you take a story and mix in some characters as well, you will find a hit. I really didn't think Spielberg could still pull off such action, yet with emotion, but alas, he does. The characters themselves, aside from the lead, aren't introduced in the real world until a ways in, so you kind of learn who they are long before you see. Kind of like the Internet, huh? What this movie has, is the creator of a video game world, called the Oasis, that exists in virtual reality and basically everyone lives in the oasis. It provides your gaming, dreams, life experiences, etc. All the things you want to do, but can't in the real world. This is partially one of my flaws of this movie. Assuming the Oasis is "Facebook" lets say (last income report shows Facebook has 1.35 billion unique members) what do you think the chances of 5 people becoming online friends all live within miles of each other? Ok, put that part aside but it just isn't gonna happen. So as our characters are very briefly introduced, minus the main character, Wade (Parzival), we learn little things about them through their interaction in the Oasis. There really isn't much development to them, then again, they didn't want a 4 hour movie either. The nuts and bolts are there, enough to make sense to their avatars in the Oasis. Well, the creator (who had to be around my age) dies, but leaves behind an easter egg (hidden treasure in the Oasis to win) that grants the winner of three keys, in various challenges, the rights to the entire Oasis, and all the stock, and power that comes along with it. As anyone would want this sort of power and money (the word trillions is used) everyone is vying to solve these puzzles and win. This is where all your action comes into play. But along the way, human emotion does get involved, and leads to the actual underlying theme of this. Yes, throughout you may have thought it was just "How many 80s references can you jam into a movie?" but really this is more of the game creators life unfolding to another generations eyes. Along with this, the movie also does a decent job of pointing out the real life struggle of how trapped one can become into this online world, ultimately to the point of losing ones identity. There are quite a few ideas that are tackled in this film and though they aren't all crystal clear in how, the end will at least give you an idea of what the movie was trying to say. Now back to the book thing. One movie, in particular, that is imitated in this movie is "The Shining" and is done quite well, I might add. I will tell you this, if you, like me, read the book first, and then saw the movie "The Shining" you would be irritated due to the changes that were made. But if you go on, as I did not, and slam that movie, just like people slam this one, then you don't know how to critique a movie for its own merits. I am not going to go out of my way to read the book, and if I do read it, and agree that much was lost in translation, I won't be coming back to change my opinion. Just sit back, enjoy the plethora of cool references to the past, and enjoy a great movie for what it is. A visual masterpiece, a story that may become all too relevant in the near future, and a good time.

Pretty intense b-budget flick
3 June 2018
My quick rating - 6,1/10. Pretty tense movie. You wouldn't think there would be much to keep your attention being pinned on the side of a car by a sniper. But for 1.5 hours, this movie had me watching. I think they key to success is the fact that these were everyday people. Not the "one" person who happens to coincidentally be ex-navy seal, or something like that. And the ways that they respond to the terror of being trapped on the side of the road by some person for no apparent reason, plucking them off for fun, and at will was quality stuff. For the gore fans, the effective use of blood, and also suggested further body damage was quite gruesome. I was close to putting this in the horror category, but I'll stick with thriller, with some horror elements. Drop in a very good ending, and you end up with a darn good movie. Don't bother with the other reviews on IMDB. Too many said the "why didn't they do this, or that" and appreciate this movie for thinking, "what would I do" and I bet you won't just be coming up with clever mcgyver ideas, but would most likely be peeing yourself in fear. This just makes it all the more real (in fiction)
