Random Acts of Christmas (2019)
Thankful this one is different
The casting works in this movie. Erin Cahill is pretty as a journalist and Jaclyn Smith looks believable as her mom. Kevin McGarry looks better and less goofy than in other Hallmark movies. Patrick Duffy plays helper to Secret Santa.
The story isn't the usual thing about a struggling business. There is a tycoon in disguise being Secret Santa. He secretly makes life better for her while pretending to be a journalist like her. A bit of a Prince in disguise type story.
It's nice to see the different things Secret Santa does. Watchable.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Exciting races - story could have been edited and shortened
This long movie is quite involving and the races are exciting. The in the driver's seat point of view makes the races exciting and the David v Goliath thing always gets you rooting for the underdog. Enjoyable even for non race car enthusiasts. The actors are good from main to supporting. Bale is convincing as the driver. Damon looks suitably tired and puffy as the ex driver turned designer.
Some faults - Some scenes could have been cut. The wife's hissy fit could have been cut. Josh Lucas' mini nasty character was over done for the sake of having a villain, Jez Butterworth the screen writer wrote plays that have made it to Broadway and are excruciatingly and unnecessarily long. Don't understand some of the strong accents of Christian Bale and his wife. The movie should have ended right after Le Mans. Less of a downer if they had.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Neither good horror nor good drama
The format is just too fragmented. The jumping around in time is excessive. Changes in time period are hard to discern. Having to remember the different scenes over several episodes is too taxing. The lighting is dim for Tv.
As far as horror is concerned nothing much happens then suddenly a very quick thing and a scream. If you blink you will miss it. As far as drama it's also confusing. Can't feel for the characters.
Bafflingly good reviews.
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Beautiful production but Emma Watson is wrong
This movie boasts stunning sets and delightful animation with an expanded story. Maybe a little too much story.
The main flaw is Emma Watson is wrong. She looks like a young teen and speaks and looks like Hermione still. Too childish. Other recent Disney heroines have been better like Lily James In Cinderella or Lily Collins in Snow White. The singing should have been dubbed by real Broadway or West End performers. Luke Evans as Gaston being a real stage performer is more convincing.
Still worth a watch.
Christmas Under the Stars (2019)
Not done before scenario for a change
Liked the cast together. Jesse Metcalf and Autumn Reeser make a compatible looking couple looks wise. She isn't silly looking like some.
The story starts off a bit more interesting than usual. He's been laid off from an investment firm. At least the story doesn't have a completely done to death set up. What's irritating is that she's angry with him for working in finance even though he isn't responsible for her troubles. Unreasonable for sure. Good thing he doesn't have to sacrifice his career for love for a change.
Involving at first then a let down
At first the movie is involving with the tense play of race and stereotypes. An adopted boy from Africa is a brilliant student. But his African American teacher suspects something isn't right about him. The actresses Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer are so likeable that you feel for each side.
It's hard to discuss the movie without referring to the ending. It doesn't feel right that Luce would resort to such a psychopathic scheme because of what happened to his friend. So the big reason for the character's actions is insufficient.
A Violent Separation (2019)
Waste of time
The attempted hillbilly drama isn't good for 2 reasons. First the story isn't well written. Although the first part about protecting your kin is quite good then the resolution falls flat.
Shooting the brother didn't ring true.
The story should have ended properly. What happens after that? If they were going to put us through the whole movie at least end their relationship on a more definite path. Felt like a waste of time.
The cute Aussie cast is too pretty to be white trash. But if they weren't nice to look at this movie would be even worse.
The Believer (2001)
Fascinating and strange but watchable
In this strange yet fasincating movie Ryan Gosling demonstrates he's a great actor. He usually is a man of few words in his movies but here he does more talking here than usual. He plays a Jewish man who didn't like his religious classes when young who has turned into a Neo Nazi. He joins up with a new facist organization falls for the daughter of one of the ring leaders, plants bombs and other things but seems to pull back when it comes to major destruction, murder or bombing. There is a good supporting cast including Teresa Russell, Billy Zane as the ringleaders and Summer Phoenix as the love interest.
Strange and different movie.
Lightning in a Bottle (1993)
Effective story beautiful Lynda
One thing this movie shows is that Lynda Carter is a good dramatic actress. It's a difficult role. The story is effective and simple. No twists. After an accident where the other party is blamed a woman realises she is actually responsible. The soundtrack has a 50s melodrama feel.
Worth a watch.
About teens but not for teens
Sex drugs and more in high school. First a warning. Although this is a show about high school teenagers it's too much for teens to watch. Much more so than "13 reasons Why". There are parts when the scenes are much more explicit than necessary for the story. There isn't a boundary this show doesn't try to push for TV. Having said all that there are some fascinating and bizarre characters that keep things morbidly watchable for 8 episodes. A biracial lesbian drug addict, a transgender girl who is her bestie, a jock with demons, his closeted statutory rapist dad, the list goes on. It's hard to keep track of the different characters and plot twists some tunes. Even if you don't agree with the suitability of the content here the acting is better than it has to be. Zendaya is convincing as an addict very natural acting. Jacob Elordi does the mean jock well.
Hate to say it but do want to see what happens in season 2.
Linda is beautiful and can sing and dance
Nice fast moving biopic of Rita Hayworth. Linda Carter is stunningly beautiful here and shows off her wonderful singing and dancing skills. In fact she is more gorgeous than the real Rita Hayworth. Quite illuminating is her marriage to Aly Khan and the clash of values regarding having mistresses.
So sad to find out about the recent tragic fate of her grand children in the news.
They did biopics better in the 80s and 90s.
The Mistletoe Secret (2019)
Kellie Pickler's charm and voice are endearing but she delivers her lines monotonously like she is reading them. It's painfully obvious when everyone else is a proper actor or actress.
There is a cute little Cyrano type story about a travel writer recommending her Utah place. The star sweeps her off but it's the ghost writer friend who loves her.
Nice for Dallas fans to see Patrick Duffy still acting as her father.
Charlie's Angels (2019)
Fun young and stylish but the story spins out of control
So nice to see Kristen Stewart in a big budget movie, she's been doing all these indie and Continental flicks. Her pretty face and tomboyish charm carries the show. She looked better with the long wig than the spiky hair. Naomi Scott looks sweeter than in Aladdin. Ella's action is convincing. It's a woman's show for sure and the men are pleasantly wimpy.
The story itself gets too complicated. By the end didn't know who was doing what to whom. Still it's a fun watch with nice on location filming in Hamburg and Istanbul.
Savage Grace (2007)
It's a true story about murder in a rich family. So it should be watchable but in this movie the story is just too gross to be watchable. Julianne Moore acts as a pretty but crazy wife of a plastics heir. She is beyond neurotic and her her son has no chance. The son is played by Eddie Redmayne is suitably cuckoo looking but too unattractive for the role. The dysfunctional pan sexual relationships are shown but the movie doesn't quite show how he became homicidal.
Good actors but icky story that is missing a few pieces.
Heritage Falls (2016)
Not a bad movie just not very special. 3 generations of men grandpa, Son and grandson go on a camping trip to the falls to bond. It's an okay watch. The actors are likeable. Not quite enough for a movie.
A Sweet Christmas Romance (2019)
Pretty but boring
I like Adelaide - she's a good actress and above the usual Hallmark standard. She and Greyston Holt make an acceptable couple. But this baking competition story lacks substance. Should have saved the two for a better story.
After the Wedding (2019)
Well acted melodrama
I enjoyed watching the actresses Julianne and Michelle show their strengths in a good melodrama.
Michelle is good at acting sad faced. Julianne is beautiful. The plot has a couple of neat twists that makes what you watched before worth while. The drama avoids getting overwrought. Nice class contrast between poor India and wealthy in NYC is pointed. The actress who plays the daughter Abby Quinn is quite good too.
An irritating Christmas
I like Rachel Leigh Cook but this story is annoying. She pesters this guy non stop to decorate his inn for her sisters wedding and Christmas.
Give it a miss.
Low Tide (2019)
Waste of time.
This is a bad movie. An unsympathetic bunch of kids steal stuff from unoccupied houses. When they come upon a treasure of coins greed gets them. A silly romance with a strange looking girl. After suffering through the unlikable characters, the showdown.
The whole thing came to nothing. What happened after the bad boy was shot?
Let It Snow (2019)
Disappointing Christmas movie mixed with teen romance. A bunch of uninteresting characters that aren't appealing. Being a fan of Kiernan and Odeya I watched this but couldn't find any of the stories involving. The pop singer thing seemed very fake. The lesbian affair wasn't convincing. Kiernan's story about her good friend and secret of love was so cliched.
Skip this one.
Shameful Secrets (1993)
Effective battered wife story
Effective movie where a battered woman takes her kids and runs. Joanna Kerns is good. The abusive husband played by Tim Mathison is 100% bad repeatedly abusive and kicks her out and more. She moves
to a shelter and the judge gives custody to the bad dad. There seems to be little recourse for her. One problem with this movie is how can everything in the system go against her? At the crux of this movie is that the judge can't take account spousal abuse in custody hearings.
When her boy starts get abused she realises she needs to run with the kids.
Worth a watch but it's quite fraught with emotion.
Patient Killer (2015)
Intriguing at first fizzles out later
Quite interesting from the start a psychiatrist and her patients who are all strange in their own ways and a Boyfriend with issues. There is a Starship Troopers reunion. With Casper and Patrick. In fact Casper directs.
Things fizzle out and the ending feels a little formula.
The King (2019)
Robert Pattinson and Timothee Chalamet should have switched roles
What a tedious movie. Terribly miscast, incomprehnsible dialog, often too dimly lit. Chalamet is too slender to be the heroic warrior king. So many other actors would have been better. In fact Rob and him should have changed places. Robert Pattinson is totally laughable as the buffoon like Dauphin would have made a better Henry and Chalamet as the Dauphin. The dialog is often incomrehensible. Why fake such heavy accents? Bad casting.
The story is hard to follow unless you are familiar with the plays. Bad writer. Very modern expletives. The characters are had to differentiate. Bad director. The lighting is pitch dark or close to some scenes. Can't make out what is going on.
The muddy battle isn't exciting because can't tell who is who.
Lily Rose Depp as the queen is out of place with her exotic looks.
Give this mess a miss.
A Very Corgi Christmas (2019)
Not a good dog or Christmas movie
Unlike recent dog movies this one isn't saved by cute dogs. The story of two single parents bonding is tedious and boring. She has to work and the spoilt kid can't understand how a single parent puts food on the table. The leads are okay to look at though there isn't much romance.
Bad bad bad
Interesting because the leads ended up getting married. Nicolette is stunning. Harry Hamlin wasn't too old yet.
The story is terribly dated mysoginstic and badly written even for that time. The twists are pathetic.
