Crop And Save
Utøya 22. juli (2018)
It successfully captures the chaos that ensues as the shootings begins, we do not get information on what happens and see it through the eyes of those trying to make it alive. We see the varied ways of responding to it, be it emotionally or how people try to hide and cope with the horrid situation and even incredible bravery.
Some say this movie comes out too soon. I don't agree. We need to be reminded of what a fanatic can do. Breivik imagined himself as some type of savior, but in reality he is the same as any Islamist terrorist. More of the same. More of the same evil. Human garbage. A human prototype.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Not a solid movie
I like the idea of having to be quiet in order not to attract the videogame monsters.
However, it isn't really realistic in any sense. What are these creatures? Are they aliens? If so, how did they even build anything in order to get to earth?
Or are they monsters released by more highly evolved aliens, if so, why don't they for instance map out the human DNA and release tons of diseases in order to wipe us out? (hint: here's a new idea. They don't even have to wage wars against us)
Since the monsters cannot hear when close to a waterfall, why not create soundtraps with loudspeakers? If things go wrong make sure to make the noise elsewhere. And since the monsters do not seem to make use of their sense of smell why not simply move from the source of noise and stay fully quiet? Or, bring something with you that you can throw to decently great distances which makes noise so the CGI monster seek for the food elsewhere?
The kid could have thrown away the noise toy and have actually been safe.
Who delivered the newspapers? Why do they not go to other neighbors with fires on at night to team up? What do they know? What resources do they have? Can they go to an island somewhere which has no monsters? Why a fourth child when you cannot even keep track of the other three?
And since it so easy to understand that they go to noise, they would be fantastically easy to deal with the help of a military who simply put on loudspeakers and target them with heavier weapons. So, this is not Aliens or Life, where the monsters actually have some intelligence and thought behind it / them.
Still, it's an OK movie, and this is thanks mostly due to the above average acting.
Watch instead: Don't breathe
In Darkness (2018)
Many great actors/actresses but the story didn't pull me in.
Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
It has some truly creepy moments but as many other modern movies it makes the mistake of trying to add humor into it in places where it does not fit. Skip the poor comedy, if you add it then make it the kind which helps people cope with very difficult situations, gallows humor as a coping mechanism.
Some of the acting is horrendous too, especially the two daughters who almost look like they haven't really been through anything and why the forced romance with older man with a quite a bit younger female?
Going through to the dark side should mean utter hopelessness and monster/demon that cannot simply be hit with a light in order to vanish fully. OK, there's symbolism of the light hitting the dark but I'd rather they create a mood that has been there which seems like forever and that no kind of escape is really possible.
If they make another movie I'll watch it, but do for bloody hell try to make it truly dark...anyone who watches horror should sort of feel that they have been through hell and getting out of it a relief.
Ich seh ich seh (2014)
I saw boredom
Unlike many I did not actually pick up the twist in the story, I think it is partly because I didn't really care and partly because I was fighting against sleep. Was I watching the movie in the wrong mood? Probably, will I watch it again? Probably not.
Ultimately the movie fails to deliver, it's not suspenseful or scary.
And the personalities do not really work. The mother goes from being very dominant to submissive by simply being tied to the bed. Sure, she is overtly dominantly ruling the house, but we get that there is no father in the gorgeous household so it's easy to think that she has taken over that role on herself. But who swifts personality like this, so easily?
Isn't the creepy kid story so much of a cliché now that we really shouldn't need to see more movies about it. Certainly a person in trouble such as the mom would be smart enough to talk tons of memories to convince the kid(s) that she is indeed their mother?
I recommend skipping this one.
